Magnitude 5.4 quake rocks Sultan Kudarat — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Sultan Kudarat province Tuesday afternoon, August 2.

It was initially measured as a magnitude 5.6 quake but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 5.4.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 41 kilometers northwest of Lebak, Sultan Kudarat at 1:24 p.m., with a depth of 15 kilometers.

It was felt at Intensity V as a “strong” tremor in the municipality of Lebak, and Intensity IV as a “moderately strong” shaking in T’boli, South Cotabato.

Cotabato City; Kiamba, Sarangani, Tupi, Lake Sebu, Banga, and Tampakan in South Cotabato; Datu Piang, Maguindanao; Pagadian City; and Lutayan, Bagumbayan, Tacurong City, Columbio, Kalamansig, Pres. Quirino, and Sen. Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat felt the quake at Intensity III (weak).

Meanwhile, General Santos City; Alabel, Malapatan, Glan, Maasim, Malungon, and Maitum in Sarangani; Koronadal and Tantangan in South Cotabato; Valencia City and Kalilangan in Bukidnon; Tubod Lanao del Norte; Davao City; Lambayong and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat; and M'lang, Midsayap, Pikit, Matalam, Pigcawayan, and Libungan in Cotabato felt it at Intensity II (slightly felt).

It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Zamboanga City and Alamada and Banisilan in Cotabato.

Phivolcs noted that the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
