Miley’s Pinoy Tattooist Here in Manila
MANILA, Philippines - Popular Hollywood teen actress Miley Cyrus has something in common with her dad, Billy Ray, and action star Sylvester Stallone: They all have tattoos.
More, they were all inked by the same person, a Pinoy, Christopher Garcia.
Garcia, a naturalized American citizen who has carved a name for himself in the US for his expertise, has come home recently for a series of workshops.
In an interview with “24 Oras,” the tattooist related how he came to service the “Can't Be Tamed” singer.
According to Garcia Cyrus’ group called him up last year while the 17-year old singer was promoting an album in Florida.
It was Cyrus herself who asked him to ink “Just Breathe” right under her left breast as a memoriam for a departed friend.
“Kasi daw during one of her charity events meron siyang nakilalang young girl na merong sakit na cystic fibrosis, parang nahirapan daw huminga, something to do with the lungs so naging close daw siya sa batang iyon at namatay ‘yong bata,” Garcia explained.
“Just Breathe” is the slogan for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—a cause close to Cyrus’ heart.
Cyrus’ gesture has brought about its own controversy with critics alleging that the former broke the law with the body art as US law prohibits tattoos for those under 18.
Garcia said Cyrus actually got the required “consent form” from her parents, Billy Ray and Tish who, not coincidentally, also asked him to work on their bodies. Garcia also worked on Cyrus’ brother, Trace.
In a separate interview, Garcia admitted to also doing a new tattoo on Cyrus—the word “love” on her earlobe.
“We had that tattoo session at their [Cyrus’] house in Los Angeles.”
As for Stallone, Garcia said he met the action hero unexpectedly when the former dropped by his shop, and there and then asked him to do a visual rendering of his children.
“He wanted portaits daw ng mga anak niya as angels,” Garcia said.
Garcia, the brother of Slapshock singer Jamir, is also fast making a name for himself locally having already worked on some celebrities including rockers Raimund Marasigan and Karl Roy, as well as basketball player Don Allado.
Garcia held a live tattoo session at the Hard Rock Cafe in Glorietta 3, Makati City on September 22. On September 23, he will be at the Chris Garcia x Team Manila Tattoo Sessions at the Manila Remix Store in The Collective, Makati City. Garcia will also be at the Dutdutan 2010 Tattoo Festival on September 24 and 25 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
