Did Rihanna wear André Leon Talley's red coat during Super Bowl Halftime Show?

The late fashion journalist was also known for wearing an iconic red coat

Apart from it being her first performance in the past years, Rihanna’s appearance at the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show was truly groundbreaking. The “Umbrella” singer proved that not all show-stopping acts must be full of pyrotechnics, extravagant production sets, and feature guest artists. Even her pregnancy announcement during her show was subdued that people need to go to the internet just to confirm it. Another thing she proved was how a high-impact look during a show could come in a single ensemble, all while redefining what fashion should be for pregnant women. 

During her performance, Rihanna was a vision in red. She wore a layered look by Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson—a custom jumpsuit and breastplate—styled with vintage diamond brooches courtesy of Ariel Saidan and Messika and footwear from the Salomon x MM6 collaboration. Toward the end of her performance, Rihanna added a dramatic red coat to her look, which many fashion stylists and journalists think was an homage to André Leon Talley. The late fashion journalist was also known for wearing the iconic red Norma Kamali “Sleeping Bag” Clutch coat.

While there are similarities, the coat Rihanna wore was not André’s. The music superstar donned a custom red maxi coat by Alaïa’s creative director Pieter Mullier.

“To me, Rihanna embodies the modern woman,” the designer says. “A pure beauty. She’s also a long-time friend of the house who has been supporting us from the beginning.”

The Norma Kamali piece, however, “is currently on view at 20 Rockefeller Center and will be sold as part of our upcoming live sale, ‘The Collection of André Leon Talley,’” as auction company Christie's posted.
