BUTUAN CITY – After havingenough power supply for the past five months in Mindanao, millions of consumers in the region will have to expect again rotating brownouts anytime this coming week, it was learned.

Worst is the coming power outages that will last until the end of this year unless supply deficiency on the region is addressed, this was the press statement sent to the Manila Bulletin by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) over the weekend.

In the statement, the NGCP expects that the power supply deficiencies in Mindanao will start from October to December unless short-term solutions are set in place.

Last month, electric cooperatives already felt between one to two hours of brownout in Central Mindanao and some parts of Northern and Southern Mindanao regions.

This time, the more than 30 electric cooperatives in the region might again suffer rotating brownouts, the company’s statement said.

“National Grid affirms that power interruptions in Mindanao will persist because of the scarcity of power supply and generation,” the NGCP.

However, amid a region-wide backdrop of power supply deficiency, the NGCP has remained steadfast in the discharge of its mandated duty of being the power transmission provider and system operator in all of Mindanao, the company’s statement said.

But, NGCP affirms that power interruptions in Mindanao “will persist because of the scarcity of power supply and generation.”

NGCP, a private corporation, is in charge of transmitting electricity from generators to distribution utilities and bulk power users. And as system operator, NGCP may not own nor operate any power plant, but can implement power curtailment based on supply and demand situation.

On the other hand, the National Power Corporation (Napocor), a government-owned corporation, and other privately-owned generating companies nominate power plants that may be dispatched into the grid by NGCP. Presently, power plants nominated by Napocor cannot meet the actual demand of customers connected to the Mindanao grid.
