Whoever eats this bread will live forever

In today’s Gospel, the evangelist John proposes two themes: Jesus is the bread from heaven, and this bread of life is prefigured in the Eucharist. At the very start of John’s Gospel, in the prologue, Jesus is already presented as the incarnate Logos—the preexistent Word of God (1:1-3), who originated from the Father and reveals the Father. Jesus does not only teach us about God, but he is the revelation and the way back to God. In a downward motion, Jesus the Son of God, was incarnated and became man; but at the same time, he is the key in the upward motion of his resurrected body that will return to the Father. Within the eucharistic celebration, God’s word is revealed to us in the Scripture readings and the Gospel, but more profoundly, Jesus’ body and blood become sacramentally present in the consecrated bread and wine transformed through the action of the Holy Spirit. Finally, all believers who partake of that same body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion will share eternal life.
Gospel • John 6:44-51 Jesus said to the crowds: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.”
