All they watch, they say, and I agree, are scenes of violence and gore. Crime stories make up majority of news served on TV news programs. They even land the headlines, more often and more prominently than news about government, prices, inflation, rice supply, etc. A TV news anchor once told me about this state of affairs in newscasts. He said, “We give the audience what they need… in a manner that they want.” In this case, according to the same anchor, news is presented in a storytelling manner, dramatized and packaged like a cliff-hanging teleserye. That includes playing up the lives of ordinary people, victims of neighborhood petty crimes. Networks’ news departments are so driven by ratings that they defy all rules of journalism. • • • CANOY IN CANNES: “He’s one of the best.” I remember Ging Reyes talking proudly of ABS-CBN News correspondent and anchor Jeff Canoy during a recent media event hosted by her department. Ging isn’t speaking out of thin air if one is to consider Jeff’s recent victories. The guy is clearly on a winning streak of late. In one fell swoop, in just a span of a few weeks, he nabbed awards from the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (first prize English Essay), the prestigious Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards in France, plus a Marshall McLuhan fellowship grant. Jeff, who covered the Marawi Siege in 2017, won the Palanca award for his long-form essay “Buhay Pa Kami’: Dispatches from Marawi,” documenting the realities of the months-long urban war in Marawi, Lanao Del Sur. His essay details the terrors of war through the eyes of civilians and soldiers during the conflict that ravaged their city. Jeff is also this year’s Marshall McLuhan fellow, an award given yearly by the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines for “embodying outstanding qualities in the field of investigative journalism.” Jeff, who also appears on “Umagang Kay Ganda,” anchors “Red Alert” on ABS-CBN and “Red Alert” on DZMM.
