The former rebels availed of the benefits offered by the government under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).
Año personally led the ceremonial demilitarization of the 21 firearms with Presidential Adviser for Southern Tagalog Jose Maria Nicomedes F. Hernandez; representatives of Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez and Quezon Governor Danilo Suarez, Second Infantry Division Commander Major General Arnulfo Marcelo BBurgos, Jr, Region 4 Police Director Police Brigadier General Vicente D Danao, Jr., Task Force Balik-Loob Commander Edwin Ello, and representatives from the national and regional line agencies.
The 21 surrendered firearms were among the initial batch of 81 firearms that have been surrendered under E-CLIP since its implementation in July 2018.
“Fifty years of conflict is enough. We have to stop insurgency,” Año said in his speech, emphasizing the ‘Whole of the Government Approach' programs to end the long-standing problems of insurgency.
The DILG Secretary said that the demilitarization of firearms was a giant feat towards the government’s quest for lasting peace.
“Malaking bagay na ibinaba ng mga former rebels ang kanilang mga sandata dahil ito ay nangangahulugan ng pagyakap at pagbabalik sa batas,” he said. “These shall no longer be used to harm, threaten, and extort the innocent,” he added.
Año also thank the local government units (LGUs) for taking the lead to end the insurgency problem in the country, emphasizing that 2,307 LGUs have already declared the Communist terrorist group as persona-non-grata.
