NDRRMC confirms two persons killed while another hurt due to 'Habagat'

By Francis Wakefield The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Monday confirmed that two persons have been killed while another was hurt due to the effects of the southwest monsoon or "Habagat" enhanced by Tropical Cyclones "Henry," "Inday" and "Josie". Jalad, executive director of the NDRRMC and concurrent administrator of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), identified the fatalities as Luisa Pelew, 54, of Bontoc, Mt. Province and Angelito Jipulan, 43, of Nagsaha, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental. Jalad said the death of Pelew was based on the spot report coming from the Cordillera Police Regional Office as validated by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Department of Health (DOH). Meanwhile, Jipulan died after he was carried away by strong water current while crossing a river in Brgy. Nagsaha and Brgy. Villegas, Guihulngan City. search and rescue operations was immediately conducted with his body recovered on July 16 along the river in the vicinity of Sitio Mabente, Brgy. Poblacion Guihulngan City. The injured victim was identified as Frauline Magwa, a resident of Bontoc, Mt. Province. Jalad said one person was reported missing and was identified as Brix Boticario, 17, resident of Bronco Compound, Brgy. Sto. Domingo, Cainta, Rizal. Meanwhile, Jalad said damage to infrastructure and agriculture is nearing the P400 million mark. Jalad said based on the latest figure they have received, a total of P380,570,094.48 worth of damage to infrastructure and agriculture was recorded in Regions 1, 2, 3,Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), 6 and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR). He said a total of P15,828,234.72 worth of assistance was provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH) and local government units to the affected families of Regions 1, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, 6, National Capital Region (NCR) and CAR. Jalad said as of their latest count, a total of 176,765 families or 786,155 persons were affected in 667 barangays in Regions 1, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, 6, NCR and CAR. Jalad said that of the total number of families affected, 68,057 or 271,588 persons are being served inside served inside and outside evacuation centers. Jalad, at the same time, said that the NDRRMC has recorded 59 incidents such as landslides, strong winds, soil erosion and coastal erosion, collapsed structure, and maritime incident in Region's 1, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, 6 and CAR. Jalad also said that to date, seven cities/municipalities were declared under state of calamity in Regions 1, 3, Calabarzon and CAR. He added that the municipalities of Asipolo and Lagawe, Ifugao and Dagupan City in Pangasinan were declared under state of calamity. Jalad said that as of Saturday, 92 passengers and two motorbancas were stranded in Ports of Pasacao and Infanta. Ferry services operations in Tumbal, Botic, Abang and Lublubnak in San Quintin, Abra were suspended due to river swelling of Abra River. Also, a total of 30 road sections and four bridges were affected in Regions 1, 3, 6 and CAR. Jalad also said latest reports revealed that 344 areas have experienced flooding in Regions 1, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, CAR, and NCR of which floodwaters in all 97 areas have already subsided. He also said a total of 157 houses were damaged - 10 totally and 147 partially in Regions 3, 6 and CAR. The NDRRMC also said 11 areas in CAR experienced power interruption on July 21 and 22. A total of 50 road sections and four bridges were affected in Regions 1, 3, 6 and CAR.
