Celebrating a decade of awesome music with MYX

A concert featuring top artists and bands is slated on Nov. 18, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of MYX, the country’s No. 1 music authority. The concert billed as “I Love MYX” will be held at the concert grounds of SM Mall of Asia.

Expected to grace the milestone event are the music channel’s past and present VJs who’ve become some of the entertainment industry’s most celebrated faces, among them Luis Manzano, Iya Villania, Nikki Gil, and many others. Performers will include popular OPM artists (Ogie Alcasid, Yeng Constantino, Noel Cabangon, Kitchie Nadal, Barbie Almalbis, and acoustic singers Nyoy Volante and Jimmy Bondoc) and bands like Chicosci, Kjwan, Callalily, Spongecola, Imago and Rivermaya.
It is recalled that some of the country’s biggest stars now like Sarah Geronimo, Christian Bautista, Nina, MYMP, Spongecola, Kamikazee and 6Cyclemind, jumpstarted their musical careers through MYX. That was when the tag “First Seen on MYX” came into being.

MYX is proven to uplift Original Pinoy Music (OPM). In fact, it was within the decade of MYX where the peak production of local music videos increased as it provided a venue for OPM artists whether mainstream or indie to perform their best in programs like MYX Live and MYX Bandarito.

Launched in 2000, MYX was geared towards an alternative programming and high-end positioning.

According to Andre Allan Alvarez, MYX Channel head and editor-in-chief of MYX magazine, when their contract with MTV was about to expire and MTV wanted to take over, they didn’t agree and MTV looked for another partner, which was Channel 41. When they re-launched MYX, they also launched new VJs the like of Karel Marquez, Heart Evangelista, and Geoff Eigenmann among others. Among those who followed included Luis Manzano, Nikki Gil, Iya Villania, et. al.

They also changed their music, Andre said, they had very good content, and with the new direction they took, in just a month, MYX became No. 1. “No one thought we could be No. 1 but we did. We gave in to our viewers – your choice, your music. Tell us what you want and we will give it to you.’’

French sound mixer amazed by Pinoys

A French sound mixer named Nikola Chapelle is currently in town to work with US-based Filipino filmmaker Ron Morales who’s doing his second feature film entitled “Graceland” (his first being “Santa Mesa,” shot mainly in Sta. Mesa, Manila two years ago).

Nikola, like Ron, is amazed by his Filipino co-workers, most notably award-winning multi-media actor Arnold Reyes (who was Cinemalaya 2009 Best Supporting Actor for “Astig”) and character actor Dido dela Paz, as well as the technical staff, for their industry, resiliency and dedication to their craft.

Nikola, who was born and raised in France, attended and finished film school in New York. He admits to a growing addiction to guitar-playing and has been working as sound mixer for short films, full-length feature films, TV ads/commercials, cartoons/3D animation, and video productions and hopes to build a career doing everything from sound mixing to sound editing and sound design.
