Judge tells PNP to be vigilant

November 25, 2010, 7:59pm

ASINGAN, Pangasinan, Philippines — A reputed judge in this province said Thursday that a total gun ban does not solve criminality, criticizing the stand of this town’s local police chief who is considering the continuous implementation of the gun ban imposed during the recent election period.

Judge Ulysses Butuyan of the Regional Trial Court Branch 51 in Tayug said the strict enforcement of the law is the key to keeping peace and order.

Butuyan had a dissenting opinion to the belief of Superintendent Domingo Eden who attributed the lower crime rate in Asingan during the election period to the implementation of the gun ban.

The judge said Eden should concentrate on police vigilance in order to catch, prosecute and lock up individuals with unlicensed firearms and use the same for criminal activities. (Liezle Basa Iñigo)
