Snow falls in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Unlike the chilly winter days in the European continent which already claimed several lives this year, this mountain resort city will start experiencing snowfall Saturday, artificial of course, in a bid to draw more tourists in the Yuletide season.

The series of snow shows to happen at the heart of this city starts at 7 p.m. on Upper Session road between the junction of Cathedral loop and the junction of Assumption Road where thousands of people are expected to commune.

The much-awaited Baguio Snow show can be caught on the following dates Dec. 5, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30 and 31, all at 6 p.m.

To ensure the maximum participation of local residents and visitors to the momentous event, Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan issued Administrative Order (AO) No. 181, series of 2010 temporarily closing a portion of Upper Session Road during the conduct of the snow show. (Dexter A. See)

METHANE POWER PLANT IN LAGUNA

SAN PEDRO, Laguna, Philippines — A methane gas power plant in the San Pedro landfill was inaugurated in Barangay San Antonio, here, the other day.

Known as the San Pedro Landfill Methane Recovery and Electricity Generation project, the power plant is an undertaking by Filipino-owned Bacavalley Energy Incorporated, which aims to be leader and model in the renewable energy industry in the country.

Bacavalley President Jun Fernandez said the project will generate power and offset the use of fossil fuels to produce electricity, thus, providing a clean alternative power supply. (Ferdinand F. Castro)

NO CAROLING ON CAVITE STREETS

CAVITE, Philippines – Officials in Cavite said that they would not allow children to carol or beg on streets during the Christmas season as they cited the hazards and dangers posed by passing vehicles in the area.

Cavite is a traffic and pedestrian accident-prone area, considering its big population and numerous thoroughfares.

The caroling and begging street children are concerns of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office under Felipa V. Social, Council for the Protection of Children under Governor Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla and the Police Office under Senior Superintendent Danilo L. Maligalig.

“As of now, we have not received any reports or complaints about the caroling or begging street children. If there is any, the concerned agencies will definitely act on it,” said Alvin Mojica, consultant for Special Concerns of the Office of the Governor (OG), said in the vernacular. (Anthony Giron)

GHOSTS CAUSED ROAD CRASH?

BAGAC, Bataan, Philippines — The driver of a cargo truck that plunged into a ravine off the mountainside road in Barangay Ibis, here, the other night told police that he saw ghosts on the road.

Richard Tolentino of Paniqui, Tarlac, driver of the truck (WFA-414), was quoted by probers as saying that he steered the truck off the road because he avoided five ghosts around 7 p.m. Senior Inspector George T. Santiago, chief of police here, said the crash killed three women and injured 17 others aboard the truck.
Santiago identified the fatalities as Maritess Llorente, 29; Emily Decepida, 37, both of Cabog-cabog, Balanga City and Marivic Salazar.

The truck, owned by Dasio Infante of Tondo, Manila, was supposed to deliver sweet potatoes to Divisoria market in Manila when the accident happened. Tolentino is now facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries. (Mar T. Supnad)
