MANILA, Philippines – Saying there is really a distinct possibility that the China government would one day surpass United States as the world power, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile Wednesday reiterated his call for the Philippines to rethink its ties and eventually choose to keep its alliance with the Communist country over America.

Enrile said that in light of the revelation that was spilled by Wikileaks, the Philippines is better off strengthening its bilateral ties with China which is now slowly emerging to be an aggressive economic partner especially in the Asian region.

The controversial website Wikileaks latest revelation disclosed that the China is bent on putting “economic pressure” on the Philippines in the next three decades in order to reconsider its ties with the US.

But Enrile said the country may not even wait for 30 years in order to shift its bilateral ties in favor of China.

“We might not even reach that. We might choose to go with China at that point. Don't kid yourself within this decade or a little beyond not more than the next decade, China will attain a very influential position in world politics,” Enrile told reporters in an interview before the Senate started its 3 p.m. session.

“That is a distinct possibility that we might have to decide and think for ourselves and find that it would better for us to ally ourselves with our neighbors in Asia,” Enrile also said.

Enrile also said it is not remotely possible that the Asian countries may finally form a European Union-like bloc to fortify its influence in the world market.

“Correct, as you can see the world is changing. We are being divided into several blocs already. You have the European bloc, American bloc composed of Canada, America and some Latin American groups especially Mexico,” Enrile said.

“It’s (time) for ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nation) and China to get together and form a bloc,” he also said.

When asked if it would be useful to have a mutual defense treaty with China, Enrile said: “We do not know yet (but there’s) an economic grouping is emerging in the world.”
