For whatever you do

Mothers are God’s greatest way of assuring us that He is everywhere. God got me by inventing mothers.

Mothers, throughout history, have played ginormously important roles in their children’s lives. Without consulting my Salvation History notes, I can name several saints who became men and women of God courtesy of their mothers’ untiring sacrifices and prayers.

I remember a philosophy professor of mine telling me in college, “We should never celebrate our birthdays; instead, we should be celebrating our mothers for risking their lives just to bring us into this world.” As I grow in age, I become more and more convinced of this advice’s truthfulness.

I therefore move that Mothers’ Day be moved to December.

35-dollar Pipe Dream

Earlier this year, India created lots of media buzz with its introduction of a prototype 35-dollar tablet computer. Headlines presented the country as tomorrow’s global technology epicenter with such a trailblazing IT product.

Touted by its proponents as a “laptop for the masses,” the product is supposed to have a three-hour built-in power and comes with an Internet browser, media player, videoconferencing, hard disk drive and a Web cam.

Lately, however, several questions about the product’s feasibility have surfaced. Critics are now saying that it would be quite impossible to keep its cost at press-release levels.

Too bad. It was, however, good while it lasted.

Google Delays OS

Sometimes, it’s easier to talk than walk. Google might have found this out last week after the company had announced the delay in its launch of its Chrome operating system. According to the online search giant, laptops running the OS will not be released into the market until the middle of 2011, making the software at least six months behind the company’s original goal of releasing the OS in time for this year’s holiday shopping season.

Well, there is no reason to feel that bad. It happens to even the best and biggest IT companies.

And for whatever its worth, kudos should go to Google’s engineers and management for having the guts to admit that they needed more time to ready the operating system. They might have learned a lesson or two from that software giant’s experience from that much-hated operating system.

Facebook’s Hacking Contest

Facebook, the social-networking world’s top banana, has issued a challenge to the world’s top hackers. The Hackers Cup promises the top coding competitors cash, glory, and an all-expense paid visit to the company’s Northern California headquarters.

The top 25 competitors will come to California for the hacking contest’s final phase.

That’s all for the meantime, folks. Join me again next time as we keep on watching IT.
