Logistics has been perceived as a male-dominated world, but no longer.
Logistics firm Ninja Van Philippines (NVPH) is already at the forefront of breaking the proverbial glass ceiling for women in logistics
when its distaff side now comprising more than a third of the company’s senior management.
(From left to right) Joy, Nadine, and Bel share their stories of hustling and succeeding as women in logistics.
Comparatively, the International Labor Organization’s Department of Statistics showed that on average, women only make up 23 percent
of logistics employees in the transport, communications, and storage sectors.
In traditionally male-dominated operations roles, women at NVPH continue to hold their own and help drive the company’s mission to provide hassle-free deliveries. Ninja Van is a tech-enabled express logistics company providing hassle-free delivery solutions for businesses of all sizes across Southeast Asia with strong presence in six countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.
In celebration of the International Women’s Month, NVPH spotlights three women and their stories of hustle, highlighting how they help
shape a more inclusive future for the logistics sector.
Joy Reodica believes that many women can be meticulous, and thinks that this attention to detail is a key trait that allows them to achieve success in the field of logistics.
As the Warehouse Manager of the Cabuyao Hub - Ninja Van Group’s largest automated sorting facility in the region - she handles key sort
and middle mile requirements for the company, including manpower, parcel sorting, and shipment dispatch management.
The fast-paced environment and focus on efficiency appealed to her given her background as an inventory analyst. With the hub’s conveyor belts processing as many as 300,000 parcels in a day, having detailed knowledge of what’s needed, ensuring clear communication with her colleagues and effective time management make it possible for operations to run as smoothly as
they can be.
Prioritizing efficiency has allowed Joy and her team to reap the benefits. Alongside her hub’s many milestones and having been recognized by the company for her efforts last year, Joy takes pride in being a hands-on mom for her family.
Troubleshooter extraordinaire
Efficiency and a focus on the nitty-gritty details are what make up Nadine Tee Ten’s hustle. She began her career in NVPH in 2020 as the company’s first Operations Analyst where data-driven decision making was an integral part of her everyday workload. After a year, she was promoted to Buyers Experience Manager. Seven months later, she found herself in a new role once again as the Special Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer where she focused on creating a positive impact on business productivity through data. With improving the business closely tied to her job, Nadine shares that she tries her best to be on the ground, understanding situations and building relationships with people. This allows her to troubleshoot more effectively and provide tailored solutions based on a specific unit or department’s needs. This could mean she’s helping manage an overloaded hub one day, and then helping rescue another hub needing support the next. Despite her dynamic, fast-paced life in NVPH, Nadine says she still manages to find the time to return to swimming - a sport she medalled in during her time in college. Beyond the technical skills and knowledge, describing herself as a “sheltered kid”, Nadine is thankful for all the opportunities that come with working with many different people and how they led her to grow both professionally and personally.
Going the extra mile Monitoring a logistics hub’s operations can be plenty to deal with on its own - but doing so in the aftermath of a devastating typhoon becomes exponentially more challenging. “No power, no water, busted hub,” are the common challenges experienced by Maasin Station Head Florabel Cortel. She recalls traveling to the nearest hub, more than 50 kilometers from Ormoc, to report situational difficulties and making the tough decision on whether to pause or continue operations. Bel decided to take on the challenge of keeping things going. For two months, she and her team traveled daily to the Ormoc hub to receive their parcels and bringing them back for delivery in Maasin. What drove her to act fast was her team and all the riders who trusted her decisions. The Maasin hub was able to restore full operations in February 2022 and take its place once again as one of the company’s top performing hubs. Bel’s quick thinking and “madiskarte” (resourcefulness) attitudes are what propelled her to be chosen as a Philippine representative for a Singapore-led operations project which had the Eastern Visayas region as its testing area. Now, she is training to become an area manager. When it comes to providing opportunities for women in logistics and other traditionally male-dominated fields, it isn’t enough to get a foot in the door. As proven by Joy, Nadine, Bel, and countless other women in, Ninja Van Philippines is committed to celebrating their successes every day while creating visible avenues for more women to lead and achieve. Launched in the Philippines in 2016, Ninja Van’s “Todo Hustle, No Hassle” commitment now serves 100 percent of the Philippine population, and has made it among the fastest-growing tech logistics companies in the country. Today, Ninja Van continues empowering businesses with fast deliveries, excellent service, and innovative logistics solutions.
