Romualdez to send 'friendly invitation' to Chinese envoy, says Tulfo

Speaker Martin Romualdez will invite Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian to the House of Representatives to talk about last weekend’s water cannon attack in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) in a bid to come up with a "win-win solution" together. 

This was bared by ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo to House reporters Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 8 by in a press briefing. 

Tulfo was quick to clarify that Romualdez's invitation was a "friendly invitation" and that ultimately, the House cannot force the Chinese diplomat to come. 

Last Saturday, Aug. 5, two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels on a resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal off Palawan were blasted with water cannons by the China Coast Guard. Sierra Madre, which serves as an outpost, is carrying a platoon of Filipino soldiers.  

Acoording to the party-list solon, Romualdez intends to ask Huang what the resupply boats did wrong to warrant the water cannon attack.

"Yung gagawin ni Speaker (What the Speaker will make) is an invitation to the ambassador to come over so they can sit down and talk about this issue. Ang tatanungin lang daw ni Speaker sa kaniya (What the Speaker intends to ask him is), 'What did we do wrong, bakit kailangan bobombahin nyo kami? (Why did you have to use the water cannon on us?)'" Tulfo said.

 

"We cannot compel the ambassador because he is the representative of his nation. So it’s like calling Presidnt Xi Jinping na 'halika dito, imbestigahan ka namin (come over here, we'll invite you); we can’t do that," he added.

The Speaker will also discuss with Huang a possible "win-win solution" to the situation, which has caught the attention of the international community. 

Tulfo said he learned of Romualdez's plan to invite the envoy for a talk last night.

He further said that Romualdez may also bring up to Huang the Manila Bay reclamation project, which reporteldy involves a Chinese company.
