The Chinese Filipino Business Club's Manila Bulletin story

It was on the bright, Thursday afternoon of August 24, 2023 when we visited the official headquarters of Manila Bulletin in Intramuros, Manila. Representing the estimated 300 strong membership of the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc. came President Stephen Sia, Honorary President Allan Wong But Loy, Honorary Vice President Johnny Lee, Vice President Gerald Chan, and Vice President Jocelyn Johanna See. Meanwhile, Ms. Ellen Chong and Mexica Bausa, attended the meeting on behalf of the CFBCI Secretariat.

When we entered the room, Mr. Basilio C. Yap, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Manila Bulletin, and his nephew, Dr. Emilio C. Yap III, Vice Chairman, greeted us warmly like close friends who are elated to see us after a long time. As we sat down in the dashing conference room adorned with Manila Bulletin’s memorabilia depicting Manila’s historic past, we couldn’t help but feel at home despite its ephemeral beauty.

We were about to introduce our officials, when Mr. Basilio said smiling, “kilala ko ‘yan lahat e” (“I know them all”), which made us feel even more appreciative. Since its establishment in 1998, CFBCI has a friendly relationship with the Manila Bulletin Newspaper Publication. Every year, CFBCI officials and members are invited to attend the celebration of the newspaper's anniversary or the anniversary of the Manila Hotel which is also chaired by Mr. Basilio. The newspaper also sends reporters to cover important events organized by CFBCI.

A steaming cup of chamomile tea was served, complimented by delicious gourmet bread from the Manila Hotel. Aside from revitalizing an old friendship, the humble meeting also touched upon the preparation for the upcoming 13th CFBCI Biennial National Convention to be held on February 21-22, 2024 at the Manila Hotel which is consistently sponsored by Mr. Basilio’s company.

Established in 1900, Manila Bulletin’s excellent leadership has transformed the publication into a well-established media network with millions of loyal patrons, making it the most widely circulated, prestigious, and influential newspaper in the country. Thus, it has been a great honor for CFBCI to become partners with such a long-standing vanguard of competitive journalism.

Crises and a devastating pandemic have passed, yet Manila Bulletin remained true to its mission of fostering positive change in the Philippines using the ‘power of words.’ Manila Bulletin has been a constant inspiration to CFBCI as it is able to adapt and flourish amid the rampant digitalization of information delivery. It is now everywhere, from printed newspapers to high-tech wrist watches, ensuring that Filipinos  won’t miss the latest news updates and impactful insights from its range of brilliant writers.

As Manila Bulletin celebrates its 124th Founding Anniversary, CFBCI wishes nothing less of overflowing success and longevity to its partner in promoting initiatives that will positively benefit the lives of Filipinos. Together, let’s traverse the journey towards a brighter future.
