'Bulong,' a horror flick with a comic twist
After Kris Aquino’s horror film “Dalaw,” Star Cinema is coming up with another horror movie. “Bulong” teams up for the first time Vhong Navarro and Angelica Panganiban.
“Bulong” directed by Chito S. Roño who gave us three blockbuster horror films in the past: “Feng Shui” and “Sukob,” both starring Kris Aquino and “T2.”
Chito based the story of “Bulong” on the superstition he heard in his home province when he was young, that if you whisper a wish to a dead person, that wish could come true. In the story, Conan (Vhong) is desperate for the love of Ellen (Bangs Garcia). He whispers his heartache to a dead woman and his wish for Ellen to love him.
After days of waiting, Conan notices that something unusual is happening. Ellen is starting to pay attention to him. Not only that. Ellen is now obsessed with him, and throwing herself at him. Surprisingly, it makes Conan uncomfortable and scared.
Conan finds Ellen’s special attention unusual. Something eerie is happening to him.
At first, he tries to disregard it until he realizes that the spirit haunting him is the same spirit of the old lady. When he cannot stand the haunting any longer, Conan and his friend Oprah (Angelica) drive to the town of Madam Kara, Oprah’s aunt, an expert in black magic.
As they travel together, Conan and Oprah’s feelings for each other are rekindled. But it makes the haunting worse, and Conan feels guilty as the spirit starts to disturb Oprah, too.
In conceptualizing “Bulong,” Chito wanted something that’s not totally horrific but something with a comic element. So who could be more perfect to play the lead characters than Vhong and Angelica?
Vhong has been dubbed the “Comedy Prince” on account of his two blockbuster comedy films: “Mr. Suave” and “D Anothers.”
Angelica has proven her comic flair in the successful fantasy-comedy “Here Comes the Bride” and in the gag show “Banana Split” for which she won as 2009 Star awardee for Best Comedy Actress. Vhong and Angelica appeared in the Maricel Soriano movie “Separada.”
“Bulong” is Bangs Garcia’s second movie with Star Cinema, the first being “Cinco.”
“Bulong” opens on Feb. 2.

Gerald’s leading ladies defenseless against threats
He may be ABS-CBN’s newest Pinoy super hero in “Buhawi Jack” (it airs today after “TV Patrol Sabado”), but Gerald Anderson admitted that he has no way of defending his leading lady Jewel Mische in the said series or Sarah Geronimo in their upcoming movie against alleged “death threats.”
The “death threats” are said to come from fans of his love team with Kim Chiu which he believes are preposterous.
“I don’t think those threats come from Kimerald. It probably came from people outside Kimerald which I don’t have any control over with. If I have control over these situations I would prevent such things from happening. I could defend my leading ladies but I don’t have control,” he said during the press conference of “Buhawi Jack.”
He added that he and his leading ladies simply ignored such issues and worked harder in their TV show and movie respectively.
He also hopes that his fans would still give the same support they have been giving him and Kim Chiu in the past.
With regards to his latest leading lady, Jewel Mische, the actor likes the dedication he sees in her. So far their chemistry on the set has been okay.
“Buhawi Jack” is his comeback to action after the success of “Agimat Presents: Tiagong Akyat.” Unlike the first “Buhawi Jack,” Gerald described his version as 100 percent Pinoy when it comes to action scenes.
“The first used karate. This time around we’re using arnis, which is Filipino martial arts. And I’m proud that for the first time, a TV series would showcase our very own martial arts,” he shared.
According to him, the cast had to learn the basics of arnis so their fight scenes would look authentic.
“In all our projects, our goal is simply to be successful. Whatever projects they give me, there’s always pressure that’s why I give my all in these projects,” he said.
“Buhawi Jack” is the TV version of Rod Santiago’s action-adventure series that first appeared in a komiks magazine.
Joining Gerald Anderson are first time actor Rap Fernandez, Philip Salvador, Joel Torre, Mark Gil and Techie Agbayani.
