Bacalzo: Efforts vs Dominguez Group not yet over after filing of charges
MANILA, Philippines (PNA) – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Raul Bacalzo said on Monday that the police’s war against carjackers does not stop with the filing of murder and carnapping charges against members of the notorious “Dominguez Group” in connection with the gruesome kidnap-slaying of car trader Venson Evangelista.
”This is not yet finished; this is just a breakthrough,” said Bacalzo as he stressed that ongoing follow-up operations are being conducted by police operatives against other suspects who remained at-large.
”We will continue with the investigation and follow-up operations of our operatives are ongoing,” he added.
On Saturday, two members of the notorious Dominguez carjacking group, namely, Alfred Mendiola and Ferdinand Parulan, were arrested by combined police operatives in Bulacan province.
Hours later, Raymond Dominguez, tagged as the leader of the group, sought protective custody at the Bulacan Provincial Police Office (PPO). He denied any involvement in the kidnap-slaying of Evangelista.
Mendiola and Parulan had admitted participation in the gruesome kidnap-slaying of Evangelista, whose charred body was recovered last Tuesday in Cabanatuan City. Evangelista was reported missing on Jan. 14 after allowing a test drive of his Toyota Land Cruiser to a prospective buyer, identified as Allan Torres.
The PNP’s special investigation task group (SITG) immediately filed murder and carnapping charges against Mendiola, Parulan, Dominguez, his brother Roger Dominguez, a certain Rolly, who was tagged by Mendiola as the one who shot Evangelista in the head; one Jayson and an alias Joel.
Two other "John Does" were included in the charge sheet filed before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office Saturday night.
”We still have the Lozano case to contend with,” said Bacalzo, referring to the kidnap-slaying of Emerson Lozano, son of lawyer Oliver Lozano.
Police authorities have expressed belief that the Evangelista and Lozano kidnap-slayings were connected, noting similarities in the manner the victims were killed and that both were engaged into buy-and-sell of high-end vehicles.
Lozano went missing on Jan. 12 after meeting a prospective buyer of his Kia Carnival in Quezon City.
Bacalzo cited the cooperation extended to the PNP by various informants that led to the arrest of Mendiola and Parulan.
”We have strong evidence. We just have to file because that is required by law,” Bacalzo said of the PNP’s case against the Dominguez group.
