Cebu to host tourism meet

CEBU CITY – At least 1,000 tourism and hospitality management students will be converging in Cebu for the third annual national convention of the League of Tourism Students of the Philippines (LTSP).

Tourism and hospitality management students from the different colleges and universities around the country have confirmed participation in the one-day convention that will be held at the Cebu Grand Convention Center on Feb. 20.

The convention will discuss topics related to conventions, events, and exhibition management.

The LTSP, the largest tourism and hospitality management students' organization in the country, has chosen Cebu again for its third national convention following the successful holding of the 1st and 2nd LTSP Cebu Convention, where nearly 1,000 tourism and hospitality students from the different universities in Cebu participated. Aklan, site for 'Ulang' culture
KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) –The town of Malinao, a land-locked municipality in Aklan, has been made a pilot area for the culture of “Ulang” or fresh-water shrimps by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

According to May Guanco, Fisheries Director of BFAR-Aklan, the government has already provided R2.9 million to the local government of Malinao to implement the project.

He also said he is set to hand a check for P155,000 to the municipality for the finishing touches of the “Ulang” nurseries this week.

Iloilo City looks for N.G.O. partner
ILOILO CITY (PNA) – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is on the look-out for a non-government organization to become an effective private partner of the city government to help children in conflict with law (CICL) who are currently housed at the Dalayunan Home for Boys located at Bo. Obrero, La Paz district.

Mabilog said his own Haligi Foundation is not allowed to help the Dalayunan to avoid confusion with his constituents.

Korea-Iloilo flight proposed

POTOTAN, Iloilo – The Korean community in Iloilo wants a direct flight from Incheon, South Korea to Iloilo Airport.

This was disclosed by Korean Ambassador to the Philippines Hye-Min Lee at the sidelight of the groundbreaking ceremony of the P200-million Modern Integrated Rice Processing Complex in Pototan town.

“We have a large population of Koreans here in Iloilo and 500,000 students are coming to the country in the next few months,” Lee said.

Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. confirmed that a representative of the Iloilo Korean United Community Association Inc. has submitted a petition letter containing 1,380 signatures. (Tara Yap)

C.V. employment rate stays same
CEBU CITY – The employment rate in Central Visayas in 2010 remains the same compared to the figures in 2009, data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) 7 showed.

The employment rate, or the proportion of employed persons to the total labor force in Central Visayas, was recorded at 92.3 percent in 2010. Data from NSO 7 showed the unemployment rate, or the proportion of unemployed persons to the total labor force in the region, stood at 7.7 percent in October 2010, the same as in October 2009.
