St. Scholastica's College hosts atomic bombing exhibit, confab
MANILA, Philippines — St. Scholastica's College, Manila is hosting at 8 a.m.Thursday, Feb. 24, the country’s first Hiroshima A-Bomb exhibit and Peace Video-Conference at the school’s Amhrein Gallery and Battig Hall.
The exhibit features 30 photographic posters depicting damage of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb during World War II as well as videos depicting life after the bombing.
The exhibits are titled “Hiroshima: Mother’s Prayer,” “Hiroshima Witness,” and “From Hiroshima to the Future-Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum” with Steven Leeper, chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, and a ‘Hibakusha or bomb survivor as special guests.
Social Action director Sr. Celine Saplala, OSB, will open the event with a prayer for peace. Sr. Mary Thomas “Tammy” Prado, OSB, vice president for Academic Affairs (VPAA) will deliver the welcome remarks while Corazon Huvalla, Sr., director of the Ligouri Life Management and Wellness Center (Guidance & Counseling) will give the introduction.
Leeper will deliver a message along with atomic bomb survivor Sadae Kasaoka who will likewise share her testimony on the A-bombing.Sr. M. Angelica Leviste, OSB, school president will deliver the closing remarks. The SSC exhibit team is composed Prof. Rebecca Marquez, chairperson of the Women’s Studies Department and College Faculty Outreach Committee, and Prof. Benjie Cabrera, Fine Arts faculty member.
This event is the first collaborative project between St. Scholastica’s College, Manila and the Hiroshima Peace Foundation in Japan, two institutions staunchly advocating the cause of peace and a nuclear-free world.
C.E.U. celebrates Arts Month
Centro Escolar University (CEU) celebrates Arts Month with cultural presentations, an exhibit, and a grand concert presented by the CEU Presidential Committee on Culture and the Arts (PCCA).
Thursday, a Yaman ng Lahing Pilipino exhibit will be opened to guests and students at the Student Activity Center. The exhibit features pictures, signed musical sheets, and other rare mementos of Antonio Molina, National Artist for Music (1973); Francisca Reyes Aquino, National Artist for Dance (1973); Lucio San Pedro, National Artist for Music (1991); Felipe de Leon, National Artist for Music (1997); Severino Montano, National Artist for Theater (2001), and Ramon Obusan, National Artist for Dance (2006).
Camille Lopez, d soprano and a faculty member of the CEU Conservatory of Music will perform at the opening rites of the exhibit.A concert by the CEU Pilipino Dance Troupe, Himig Centro Escolar, CEU Concert Band, and CEU Conservatory of Music Chorus will also cap the event.
Other activities held during the monthlong event were cultural presentations of the Culture Section of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran-Manila, and a tribute performance by CEU Conservatory of Music’s Fredline Parin, Ricardo Mojica, Mario Echipare, Elisanta Cortez, Jason Ros, and selected Music students.
P.W.U. marks 92nd Foundation Month
The Philippine Women’s University celebrates its 92nd foundation anniversary with theme “Building on the PWU Legacy Towards the Centennial.”
Dr. Jaime Galvez-Tan and Dr. Beatriz Dykes will speak in a symposium titled ‘’Wellness from the Heart’’ today, from 1-5 pm. A recognition day will be held on Feb. 28.
The School of Hospitality and Management will also hold a culinary showdown and food photography/styling today at the World Trade Center. PWU’s 80th reunion, meanwhile, will be held on Feb. 26, 5 p.m. at the Centennial Hall of Manila Hotel. Other activities included the installation of new PWU president Dr. Francisco Benitez, Higantes parade and Fiesta Kainan on Fine Arts Week, Interior Design seminar, Teacher’s Day celebration, Mr. and Ms. PWU, the Junior and Senior Promenade, and “Parangal” by the School of Music.
