Is Rabeh Worth Trading for?

MANILA, Philippines – Days have passed and nothing concrete has come out from the rumored PBA trade in the works between the San Miguel Beermen and the Air21 Express.

While the trade proposal is reportedly already in the hands of the PBA Commissioner Atty. Chito Salud, it will only be a matter of time now before we see if this trade will materialize or not.

The only thing out in the open right now is that San Miguel is making a go for the top three picks of Air21, Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Rey Guevarra. In exchange, the Beermen have originally offered veterans Danny Seigle, Mick Pennisi, Joseph Yeo and a 2011 draft pick.

The PBA has reportedly asked a revision on the trade. Unconfirmed reports have it that Jay Washington has been mentioned for inclusion in the trade since he and Al-Hussaini are of the “same” value.

Which brings you to ask, is this claim true? Washington has proven his worth ever since joining the San Miguel camp and winning back-to-back PBA Best Player of the conference just recently.

Al-Hussaini, the former King Eagle has been impressive thus far and is considered the future of the PBA. However, Rabeh’s history maybe something worth checking.

Prior to the PBA Draft, it was learned that Al-Hussaini was intentionally picked second to give him a lesson in humility.

As reported here on Manila Bulletin in August of 2010, his star complex had reportedly grated many of his peers and other basketball officials.

Baclao was made the first pick followed by Al-Hussaini.

Rabeh called the move an “insult” and couldn’t accept playing second fiddle to his Ateneo teammate, Baclao. However all that was buried and Al-Hussaini practiced hard and has been a force for the Express team.

With all those factors put on the table, is Rabeh worth trading for on the part of San Miguel Beer?

There is no denying that the SMB franchise has aging players and the search for young marquee players to carry on the winning tradition is high on their list. Brace yourselves for a hellacious week as we await the official decision on this trade between San Miguel and Air21.

A trade involving Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra for Seigle, Pennisi and Yeo plus a 2011 1st -round pick is a big blow to the PBA's balance and equality among member teams. Seigle and Pennisi are way past their prime and Yeo was never the potential that he was perceived to be. The trio of Rabeh, Nonoy and Rey have shown what they are capable of doing especially Rabeh and Nonoy. To make it a "FAIR DEAL" and to show good faith, San Miguel should offer Seigle, Pennisi and Jay Washington in exchange for the trio of Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Guevarra.
