700 join Cebu E.D.S.A. run
CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — Over 700 Cebuanos joined in a post EDSA celebration event Sunday dubbed “The EDSA Run: A People-Powered Run to Build Classrooms” from the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda to IT Park in Lahug, Cebu City.
In spite of a light drizzle, the runners were determined to show solidarity as a simultaneous event was also organized in ten other cities and provinces across the country for a similar cause.
The Cebu City EDSA Run was organized by the Yellow Movement of Cebu and the Yellow Army Movement Youth Volunteers, who are solid supporters of President Benigno S. Aquino III. The event was held in partnership with the Run For Sight Foundation.
L.T.O. to set up Boracay office
BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan (PNA) — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) plans to set up a satellite office in this resort island to ensure that the Clean Air Act is properly implemented here.
This developed as concerns were raised over hundreds of tricycles plying to this resort island daily.
Chemicals emitted by tricycle engines’ emissions are the main cause of air pollution here. The move is currently being studied by the Malay Council’s Committee on Transportation.
In the past, LTO personnel come to this resort island on an occasional basis to operate a mobile smoke testing facility which can only accommodate 18 vehicles daily.
School safety measures issued
CEBU (PIA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu Provincial division recently issued safety measures in schools in the aftermath of the abduction and murder of six-year-old Ellah Joy Pique of Minglanilla, some 15 kilometers from Cebu City.
DepEd-Cebu Disivion Pre-School coordinator Vina Salomon informed members of the Provincial Council for the Welfare of Children (PCWC) that DepEd-Cebu has issued a memorandum circular for safety measures guidelines to all public elementary and high schools in the province.
Farners warned vs infestation
SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — In view of the reported infestation of Brontispa longissima commonly called coconut leaf beetle in three barangays in Pandan, Antique, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has warned coconut farmers of the possible spread of the infestation to neighboring towns.
PCA Antique manager Merlyn Teodoro said the three barangays in Pandan affected by brontispa are Sta. Cruz, Centro Norte and Bagumbayan, all of which are high-coconut producers.
Capiz cop awarded
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — Police Regional Office (PRO) – 6 Director Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol, Jr. has conferred the “Medalya ng Papuri” to PO3 Donna Asmod of the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO) during the recent 20th Foundation Day celebration at Camp Delgado in Iloilo City.
The recognition was in view of Asmod’s accomplishment as 2010 Best Performing Information Officer of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Regional Office 6. The awardee is an active member of the PIA – supervised Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers (CAGPIO).
