Seigle and Samboy: A Tale of Two PBA Stars
MANILA, Philippines – While Danny “the Dynamite” Seigle may be sitting on pins and needles these days, he has had a wonderful PBA career.
Whatever happens on the supposed PBA trade being drawn up between by San Miguel Beer and Air21, every Filipino will agree that Seigle is without a doubt one of the greatest players to play in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Looking back to history, Seigle can be compared to the plight of another San Miguel legend. He goes by the name of Avelino “Samboy” Lim otherwise known as the “Skywalker”.
Just like Lim, Seigle’s career had been hampered by a spate of injuries.
Perhaps the most serious one that has made “the Dynamite” injury-prone in the latter years was the one he suffered when he joined the RP National Training Pool for the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, North Korea.
It was in this year that Seigle suffered a serious torn right Achilles tendon after making a shot during one of the team’s pre-Asian Games against team Qatar.
He was unable to play for the team and sat out most of the 2003 season due to the injury.
Both Seigle and Samboy were never named the PBA’s season MVP.
However, Seigle does have PBA Best Player of the Conference Awards (2005-2006) and 3 PBA Finals MVP Awards (1999-2000). He has never played for any other team other than San Miguel Beer and has helped the ballclub win 6 PBA championships.
As for Samboy Lim, he holds the distinction of being one of the 25 PBA Greatest Players, a member of the 1989 Grand Slam team and being the first ever recipient of the PBA Sportsmanship award.
Lim has savored the PBA gold for 7 times, 6 with San Miguel Beer and one with Northern Consolidated back in 1985 under coach Ron Jacobs.
The farthest both players have gone was to be named to PBA Mythical Teams during their tenure. They haven’t relished winning an MVP.
However, with PBA championship rings to their credit, no one can take away the fact that both players did serve the San Miguel Franchise.
Lim now acts as the team manager for PBA crowd darling Barangay Ginebra while Seigle is obviously at the twilight of his career.
On whether the impending trade does materialize, the fact is that Danny Seigle will be always identified as a San Miguel Beerman.
Seigle will forever be known as someone who had helped the SMB franchise win 6 PBA crowns.
Such a feat is an achievement coveted by any professional basketball player, something many perceive is a fulfillment in its own right.

Awesome article Mr. Brian Yalung. Can we request for an article about Samboy Lim. I am sure that his fans worldwide would be thrilled to read a recent news item re their favorite player. And judging by the many followers of his facebook account - SAMBOY LIM (Athlete) - there are a lot of us who would love to know what is new with the Skywalker. Thanks and more power to you!
Hi there! I definitely have that lined up in my PBA interviews. Will try to prioritize that for you. Thanks for reading The Dugout! :) Cheers!
hay, why did they trade him off...that's sad!
It's just sad to hear that he has been traded off to another team. sad! sad! sad! why now? no doubt he's one of the greatest players in the PBA. i like him and will always do. i wonder if he has a gf now? (just asking)
i was also kinda hoping danny would end his carrer in smb just like olsen.. but like any loyal fan, no matter what, i'd stille be here supporting danny s., dynamite danny forever!!!
If it's true that smb is indeed trading (or has already traded) Danny to another team, this is really very sad. Danny started his career with smb, and always gave every game his all. Without his help, baka di nila nakuha yung mga sunod-sunod na championship nila under Coach Jong. He is always very intense, focused, patient even when opponents hit him, a great player - a shooter, rebounder, defender, an intelligent player who knows what moves to make at the right time. Sayang! This will be truly SAN MIGUEL'S LOSS! In the last conference, Danny was showing his great form again despite the limited time and having been out for sometime due to injury. What a waste of precious talent for San Miguel to trade Danny Seigle, but what a big gain and boost for the team that will get him. I have been a Danny fan from the day he was drafted and I wish him the very best wherever he plays. I know he will be great, and who knows, maybe this is the way for him to finally get the elusive MVP award (which should have been his the very first year he played) which he really deserves. No matter where you play, Danny, you will always be great and we, your loyal fans, will always be behind you!
I beg 2 disagree that Danny Seigle is needless these days....It's with the coach how he will utilize his players...SMB's defeat in the finals against talk n text should not be blame with the players alone but also with the enitre team...Their are a lot of good players of SMB but the problem is not with the players itself but as well as the coaching staff...Whenever Danny Seigle is put on the court he would always do his best to contribute to his team..It may not be on the points aspect but it is his passion to really word hard on the court...He may be constraint by his injury but it's very clear that he is without a doubt a competitive player the PBA has ever produced....It could not be denied that he is one of the greatest palyer of SMB and in the PBA as well..You still can do it Danny, i believe on you...a lot of your fans is praying for you...Show them that you're not as what they think right now...You're still the "dynamite" that when it explodes is unstoppable..Good luck in you new team and home....God Bless!!!
chito loyzaga is nowhere the greatness and effectivity of Danny seigle, chito cant even tap the board because of his enormous size. truly he contributes to both ends of the floor but that is mostly as a floor decor...because he always finds himself sprawled on the floor...he can have the monicker dynamite, it sounds and looks sissy anyways..seigle can have a monicker like : the eagle...."the eagle siegle..lol, coz of his uncanny abilities to glide and"fly" in the mid-air..anyways goodluck to Danny s. on his new team, maybe now he can be utilized more than what he truly deserves..
i believed it was not danny s. who tagged himself w/ the monicker 'dynamite' but it was the commentators who named him that. but if others would claim that it originally meant for loyzaga i don't think
danny s. would ever mind since like what dolls of barbie mentioned, danny s. is never after recognitions. what he wants is just for his team
to win more championships. though there were setbacks in his career, he's proven so many times that nobody can put a good man down. danny s. is a good man inside and outside the court and i guess he just
deserved to be treated with respect even if he's not at the peak of his career anymore. GOD Bless you ds and i together with your other fans
here in the States will always pray for you. Whatever happens, we'll
stick it out with you. we love you ds! to the writer of this column above, i hope this message reaches ds, so he will know that we care...
danny seigle at 34 is still very much competitive. so i don't agree that
smb should include him in their trade list. danny seigle is the kind of player who plays hard inside the court and who is not selfish with the ball. he displayed great plays last conference even for just a limited time.
i wonder why these trade issues should include danny seigle. i've been
following danny seigle's career since he started and i knew and i guess
we all knew for a fact that danny s is a very serious, reliable and dependable player and the one who is not thirsty for recognitions. anyways, though he's 34 he still could be a dominant factor inside the court. if given a longer playing minutes, i'm sure he could provide quality
plays for his team. last conference he displayed great plays even if he was only given limited time he was able to prove that he is still ' The
Dynamite'. if smb doesn't want him anymore for i believe they play 'favorites' i hope that some other teams who recognizes danny's capabilities would acquire him. to danny, whatever happens, we'll keep on supporting you and we love you!
Let Danny Seigle get his own unique monicker. There's only one "DYNAMITE" of the PBA and that's Chito Loyzaga. Seigle is nothing more that a great offensive else while Chito contributed to his team on both ends of the floor.
It's really unfair for another player to be tagged with a monicker already associated with another player. The original "DYNAMITE" of the PBA is Chito Loyzaga. He's a defensive player of a different level that packs a deadly accuracy from beyond the arc. Danny Siegle is a good offensive player ang nothing more while Chito Loyzaga contributes to his team on both ends of the floor.
bkt may ganitong article for danny s. while he's still active.
as if he'll be retiring very very soon. (as in after the trade, poor pba, brilliant cojuangco)
