MANILA, Philippines--Scandinavia will soon be highly accessible to Filipino travellers and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) with the scheduled launching of Emirates’ non-stop, daily flights to Copenhagen starting August 1, 2011.

Renowned as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and home to the world-famous Little Mermaid statue and the Tivoli Gardens amusement park; Copenhagen is the latest addition to Emirates Airline’s expanding route network.

Denmark’s largest city and capital is the Dubai-based carrier’s 112th international destination and the 27th destination in Europe.

“Copenhagen is an important hub for the whole of Scandinavia,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline & Group. “The launching of Emirates’ non-stop service to the Danish capital will open up a new market for the multi-awarded airline.”

Sheikh Al-Maktoum noted that the new service will offer Denmark’s businesses with easy connections to previously untapped markets.

“Dubai and Copenhagen both have a strong maritime and trading tradition,” added Al-Maktoum. “Emirates is looking forward to adding this dynamic city to our European network and also welcoming Denmark as the 67th country that we fly to from Dubai.”

Denmark is situated in the northern part of Europe called Scandinavia. It borders the Baltic Sea and the North Sea and is north of Germany and Poland, southwest of Sweden and south of Norway. Copenhagen covers a land area of 88.25 sq. km. It is a compact city center which has developed into a ma¬jor regional hub of culture, art, travel, business, sports, media and science.

“Denmark’s geographical location makes it a superb gateway for Filipino visitors who wish to travel around Scandinavia and Europe,” said Gigie Baroa, Emirates’ Philippines Country Manager. “This will be a major development for air travel throughout the world because this new service is expected to boost the population of Filipino travellers in Copenhagen and in different parts of Denmark as well.”

Baroa added that Copenhagen is an exciting modern metropolis whose Old World history coexists with the most up-to-date trends in architecture, fashion and design.

There are 10,000 Filipinos living in Copenhagen according to the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). According to 2009 statistics from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), the total number of deployed land-based OFWs by country (new hires and rehires) to Denmark was 88.
