Bolick optimistic NLEX can crawl out of slump

Robert Bolick stayed defiant after NLEX slumped into a four-game losing skid that put their playoff hopes now hanging in the balance in the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup. 

The Road Warriors looked like just a shade of their version that opened the conference with a 5-1 record after being at the bad end of a 120-104 manhandling from Rain or Shine on Friday, May 3.

The loss pushed NLEX to a 5-5 record heading into its final game against Barangay Ginebra – a game where the Road Warriors could have been gunning for a second seed and twice-to-beat advantage but instead, left them to fight for a spot in the Magic 8.

Depending on the result of the Saturday’s game between Meralco and San Miguel, a loss could drop NLEX to as low as eighth spot where it would need to play NorthPort for the playoff game for the last quarterfinals slot.

“May chance pa kami. Isang game pa. Anything can happen, back against the wall na,” said Bolick, who returned back to action for NLEX after missing their last game against San Miguel.

“Kailangan kalimutan na namin to. Ang sama ng sunud-sunod na talo namin. Tingnan natin sa Sunday, mabigat-bigat yung kalaban,” he added.

What was more alarming more than the defeats was the manner the Road Warriors were losing: they bowed to ROS by 16 points, absorbed a 17-point defeat against San Miguel and got beaten black and blue by Phoenix by 35 points.

“Kailangan maayos namin kundi mahihirapan kami. Sayang yung pinondo namin na 5-1 tapos 5-5 na kami di ba. Kailangan pakamatay kami sa Sunday, sayang yung opportunity,” Bolick said.

Even the inspired play from the new dad Bolick, who still exploded for 38 points despite lacking sleep while attending to his wife and son and missing a couple of practices for the Road Warriors.

“Na-shock nga ako sa ginawa ko ngayon kasi from Sunday, hindi ako nag-ensayo. Pagpunta ko ng game symepre inspired ako,” said Bolick.

“Masaya lang ako kasi may anak na ako eh. Pero sa loob, masakit talo kami eh. Di masaya pag talo,” he added.
