Antipolo Cathedral officially opens for this year's pilgrimage season

Starting Tuesday, May 7, the International Shrine of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, also known as the Antipolo Cathedral, will officially open its door to pilgrims coming from different parts of the country.

A concelebrated Mass at the Cathedral was scheduled at 5 p.m. with pilgrims coming from various provinces and nearby cities in Metro Manila expected to attend the religious activity as part of the celebration of the solemnity of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

A 6 a.m. a procession from the international shrine to the Pinagmisahan Hills, where the first Tagalog homily was held in the city on May 6, 1521, kicked off the pilgrimage season. It was followed by a Holy Mass at the Pinagmisahan Hills as a reenactment of the historic event that happened on May 6.

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, a procession from the cathedral to the streets in the vicinity of the church and back to the cathedral was scheduled.

Hundreds of pilgrims, some in buses and private vehicles, visit the Antipolo shrine everyday during the pilgrimage season, also known as Ahunan sa Antipolo, which will run until the first week of July.

City Tourism Office head Mar Bacani said residents and pilgrims were expected to join the morning trek to Pinagmisahan Hill to commemorate the historical event.

Shrine rector and administrator Fr. Reynante Tolentino said regular novenas, the praying of the Holy Rosary, Masses and processions, will mark the pilgrimage season.
