VP Sara's resignation 'inevitable', new DepEd exec must be veteran in educ sector - senators

Senators expressed differing views over Vice President Sara Duterte's resignation from all her Cabinet positions on Wednesday, June 19.

Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero said that he respects the decision of the Vice President and wishes her well.

He expressed his belief that her resignation was inevitable from the time her father, Former President Rodrigo Duterte, and her siblings and allies started "attacking" President Marcos and members of the First Family.

"Its inevitability became more pronounced when she was already silent and not expressing her support on certain policy issues such as the West Philippine Sea, the Bagong Pilipinas Hymn, the Quiboloy cases and attempted arrest, etc.," he added.

"As the Vice President, she has every right to have policy differences with the President and I believe that people love and respect her precisely for that… for having and fighting for what she believes in and for her own beliefs," he added

Escudero said that she wishes Duterte well in her new journey as she continues to serve the people as the Vice President.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III said that the President should immediately prepare to appoint the next Secretary of Education.

"This person must be someone who has worked with or in the department for decades. Someone familiar with how the department works as well as with the problems of the education sector and educational system," he said.

"Someone who has dedicated his or her life to education and can show the track record for it," he added.

He refused to comment on the Vice President's future political plans.

Sen. Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, who is known to be close to the Dutertes,  said that he hopes that the Vice President finds peace and comfort in her present situation.

He added that he will always support her in whatever future decisions she is going to make to better serve the country, regardless of function and position.

"I have known VP Sara since she was little, and I have always admired her selflessness and unconditional love for our country. Whatever her reason may be for resigning as DepEd Secretary, I believe that it was well thought of," he said.

"I believe it was a choice that took into consideration the best interest of our people, as has always been characteristic of her. Of that I am sure," he added.

Dela Rosa also mentioned that he "fully trusts" that Duterte will continue to fulfill her mandate as the Vice President of the Philippines and help uplift the lives of every Filipino.

"After all, beyond her titles, it is her integrity that defines her leadership. And it is this integrity that she shall always uphold," he added.

In a Facebook post, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said that Duterte came to Malacañan on Wednesday, June 19, to personally tender her resignation as a member of the Marcos Cabinet, Education Secretary, and vice-chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said President Marcos accepted Duterte's resignation.
