Davao ready for transport strike – mayor

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (PNA) – City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio assured the public that buses will be fielded on major thor-oughfares tomorrow, March 31 to cater to commuters who might be stranded by the planned transport strike.

Duterte-Carpio said that while she empathizes with the issues behind the transport strike, the city government has the duty to also preserve the interest of the public in general.

She emphasized that many workers in the city are daily-wage earners on a no-work-no-pay status and some employers demand attendance to work despite the transport strike.

The mayor, at the same time, warned transport strike organizers and participants to observe the law and propriety while they exercise their right to redress grievances.

“I am warning protesters not to use spikes, to force and threaten non-protesters, and to block the roads,” Duterte-Carpio said.

She said maximum tolerance will be observed by the authorities provided no crime will be committed.

For his part, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Regional Director Benjamin Go warned those who will join the one-day nationwide transport the possibility of having their franchises canceled.
