MANILA, Philippines -- Angel Locsin is trying to do what traditional action stars have failed to accomplish in the past years – revive the genre.

“Imortal’s” fight director Lester Pimentel christened Angel with the tag “certified action actress” when asked how he would assess the female lead star of the series.

“I think Angel is what we can call a certified action actress. She is good in fighting as well as in wired stunts. She can roll. She can jump and she wants to do her own stunts,” the director explained.

He added that he rarely worked with actresses with such intensity and passion as Angel’s in the action genre. For him, Angel is also very fit for any action scenes. And he wasn’t surprised at all that Angel didn’t want, as much as possible, to use doubles unlike other stars.

So why does Angel do her own stunts?

“She doesn’t want to short change the viewers,” replied Lester. “But sometimes there are requirements for her to use a double so I make her use one.”

For “Imortal’s” finale episode tonight, the fight scenes of Angel were all hers. Deemed as the “biggest, most exciting and most explosive” fight scenes from the said series, viewers would get to see Angel giving more than 100 percent in every punch, kick, jump and stunt.

Lester said his actors have developed fighting skills doing such scenes over the course of the series. This only proved how much his actors have immersed themselves in their respective characters.

“I was surprised with John Lloyd because he was able to translate his proficiency in drama into action,” he said.

What makes the fight scenes work too were Angel and John Lloyd’s trust on him as fight director.

“They put their trust on me but they have their own input as to how they should act and express their emotions while fighting,” he said. “What I also admire about Angel and John Lloyd was that they never complained even if they were soaked in water for 12 hours they still did their fight scenes very well!”
