Dolphin rescued

PAGBILAO, Quezon, Philippines — A female dolphin caught in a fishing net was rescued and released back to sea off Barangay Bantigue, here last Wednesday, Lawyer Sheila de Leon, head of Tanggol Kalikasan-Southern Tagalog (TK-ST) reported yesterday.

De Leon said that the dolphin measured about one-and-a-half meters long and sustained no serious injuries after being caught in the net of fisherman Daniel Ruicol meters off the Sunshine Beach Resort.

De Leon said the owner of the resort took care of the dolphin until it had its rest and then helped it back out to sea. (Danny Estacio)

43 areas get 430 fishnets

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Philippines — The provincial government distributed at least 430 fishnets and other fishing paraphernalia in 43 coastal barangays across Binmaley, Lingayen, Bugallon, San Fabian, San Carlos City and Labrador. The fishnets are part of the provincial government’s project dubbed “Ilog Ko, Bilayen tan Aroen Ko (My River, My Love and My Life).

Sta. Rosa hosts museum day

STA. ROSA CITY, Laguna, Philippines — The city government hosted last Wednesday the International Museum Day at the Museo de Sta. Rosa City, which was chosen as the venue of the celebration by the National Committee on Museums of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCOM-NCCA). The occasion has been celebrated annually worldwide since 1977 with the aim of increasing public awareness on the role of museums in developing society.

While the city is known as an industrial and commercial center, it is also holds a rich history and cultural heritage as shown in the items on exhibit, said Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas. (Ferdinand F. Castro)

Bulacan wages fight vs rats 

MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan, Philippines – Dubbed “Daga’y Puksain, Kita’y Palaguin (rid the rat, increase income),” Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado and his Provincial Agriculture Office embarked yesterday on a massive operation to control rat infestation in Pulilan and Baliwag towns.

The governor said the project which is being done in preparation for the coming planting season is also the beginning of continuous strategies to control and eradicate rats that destroy crops. Under the program, barangays are enjoined to kill not less than 30,000 rats.

Cash incentives will be given out – P30,000 for the first prize winner; P20,000 for second prize; and P10,000 for the third prize. (Freddie C. Velez)

Calamity workers to be deputized

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Aside from clearing roads and debris from landslides and soil erosion, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will also help in rescuing calamity victims during the onslaught of typhoons, heavy rains and other calamities not only in the city but also in the whole region.

Engr. Ireneo S. Gallato said concerned offices are ready and equipped to dispatch quick response teams who will work on a 24-hour basis during calamities and clearing operations in order to help save lives and property from extreme danger. (Dexter A. See)
