Government starts skin disease prevention program in BJMP jails

BJMP releases 1,501 PDLs since March; records 1,151 PDLs infected with COVID

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) embarked on the extensive scabies mass treatment for the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in its jail facilities with the kick-off point held at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory.

Dubbed as “Oplan Alis Scabies 2024,’’ the initiative started on Aug. 27 until Sept. 14 and is intended to eradicate the skin disease afflicting the BJMP-supervised PDLs who are prone to severe itching, disruption of sleep and other concerned health issues.

Quezon City Jail Male warden Supt. Warren Geronimo noted that the initiative is the largest scabies mass treatment to be done in a Philippine jail as it aims to be the standard in the advocacy and policy drafting to suppress the spread of the said skin disease.

He pointed out that the program came to fruition based on the medical results and recommendations of the Scabies Prevalence Survey in cooperation with the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Dermatological Society, BJMP and International Committee of the Red Cross Philippines.

A few months back, an estimated 600 PDLs in the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-manned Metro Manila jails were afflicted with boil, scabies and other skin ailments due to the prevailing extreme heat..

BJMP spokesperson Chief Inspector Jayrex Bustinera assured that appropriate medical and safety measures are implemented in its supervised jail facilities to make PDLs’ condition less uncomfortable.

He added that the number of boil and scabies cases are not expected to rise this year as the BJMP has religiously conducted decongestion schemes in its jail facilities.

The BJMP spokesperson noted that the BJMP has continuously coordinated with the Department of Health (DOH) and the local government units (LGUs) to ensure the wellbeing of the PDLs.

Earlier, BJMP chief Director Ruel Rivera disclosed that the cases of similar skin diseases in the other BJMP regional jails in the country are “paisa isa’’ lang (very few.)

Aside from its DOH coordination, Rivera disclosed that the BJMP had requested the water concessionaires for the ample supply of water to enable the PDLs to take daily or even twice a day baths.

The BJMP chief explained that air only moves around the jail facilities when using electric fans but the air shelf brings hot air out of the premises.
