MANILA, Philippines — One of the artists we know who is endowed with a healthy persona is singer-actress Karylle. She radiates inner glow, projects health of mind and body. But she was not always like this, saying that she only got into a healthy lifestyle to overcome a personal problem.

“I went through a period when I went out all the time to keep me distracted. I stayed out late at night at clubs. But after a month, when I realized this wasn’t doing me any good, I vowed to change my lifestyle. I figured that what I needed was a fresh start,” Karylle revealed.

It all started when Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan asked her to join a fun run which made Karylle think twice about her unhealthy lifestyle. At the race, she met and ran with her good friend Noelle Wenceslao, one of the first Filipino women to conquer Mt. Everest. That fateful meeting at the marathon inspired Karylle to do something about her life.

Karylle now runs thrice a week in ULTRA or Bonifacio Global City. Sometimes she would join running trips in Tagaytay with her coach, Allan Ballester, who is part of the RunRio Team that organizes marathons.

“I also run when I am doing out-of-town projects. I sort of ‘acclimatize’ myself in places where I have to sing, like in Baguio, Palawan and Subic. It’s fun to know a place that way. I heard before that UP Pres. Barrack Obama runs in the morning. That actually opened my mind to the fact that a regular workout increases your energy throughout the day. The first couple of fun runs that I joined, which happened before ‘ASAP,’ would leave me so tired that I would have to sleep after my performance in ‘ASAP.’ In time, I got used to it already. Now, 10K runs don’t leave me feeling exhausted,” Karylle said.

She added that running has improved not just her body, but her outlook in life as well.

Aside from running and practicing Pilates, Karylle sticks to a healthy diet.

“As much as possible, I eat fruits before my meals. I like eating bananas, apples and star apples,” she said.

It didn’t come as a surprise when Karylle found a new “best friend” in Fruitas. According to Lester Yu, president of Lush Enterprises, makers of Fruitas, “Karylle fits our new product’s healthy bottled juices.”

Among the Fruitas products (available in leading supermarkets nationwide) Karylle said she loves the strawberry smoothie and the Ice Candy.
