Cebu cargo ship catches fire
MANDAUE CITY, Cebu, Philippines — The cause of the fire that hit Carlos Gothong-owned cargo vessel, Ozamis Bay, docked at Pier 7 in Mandaue City Wednesday night last week is still being probed.
The fire which started in the ship’s engine room at around 11:35 p.m. took the Mandaue Fire Department some two hours to douse. No injuries were reported.
Probers are checking reports that there were welding activities near the engine room when the fire took occurred. (Mars W. Mosqueda, Jr.)
Fun run on Rizal Day
SILAY, Negros Occ. (PIA) — Silay City will observe the 150th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal with a “Fun Run for Education” with the theme “Every Runner, a Finisher; Every Finisher, A Winner” today, June 19. Over 2,000 students, pupils, teachers, parents, government employees and socio-civic club members are expected to join the activity.
The run will start at Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, passing the historic Antonio Luna Street and Calle Cinco de Noviembre. Fun run participants will then offer a wreath at the Rizal monument at the plaza.
DAR marks 23rd CARP anniversary
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) — The Iloilo Provincial Office of the Department of Agrarian Reform kicked off the month-long celebration of the 23rd anniversary of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program with a motorcade around Iloilo City, joined by personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Agriculture, and other agencies and beneficiaries.
The celebration highlights the theme “Agraryo, Agrikultura, Kalikasan: A Convergence towards Sustainable Rural Development,” bringing together partners and stakeholders with programs along this thrust.
Students join BFP fire drill
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — Over 1,000 students and faculty of St. Anthony College and St. John-Roxas took part in separate fire drills conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recently in two tertiary schools here.
The activity at the College of St. John – Roxas was conducted simultaneously with an earthquake drill through the coordination of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) – Capiz.
The fire simulation exercise is part of the on-going lectures and fire drills to improve Capiceños’ capabilities in firefighting.
Forum on prostate cancer set
CEBU CITY, Cebu — The Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will host a public forum on prostate cancer on June 22, a Wednesday, at the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center inside the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) compound here.
Prostate cancer develops when cells in the prostate, found in the pelvis under the urinary bladder and in front of the rectum, surrounding part of the urethra mutate into cancer cells. EJACC urges the public to undergo early detection measures while maintaining a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, exercise, proper hygiene, and avoiding stress and vices. (Phoebe Jen Indino)
