MANILA, Philippines — Authorities retrieved another cadaver four days after the Davao City flash flood, bringing the death toll to 30, a police official revealed Saturday.

Supt. Jose Carumba, spokesman of the Southern Mindanao regional police, said the body of Zaldy Supa, 34, was retrieved late Friday afternoon following the relentless search and retrieval operation on the Pangi River and nearby areas.

“A total of 30 people are now confirmed dead, we are still looking for one remaining victim,” said Carumba.

The official was referring to three-month-old Mark Louie Palomar, the only person remaining on the missing list.

Most of the fatalities are children who are among the 12,714 families living along the Pangi River which overflowed on Tuesday night, causing a 10-foot flood in five barangays in Davao City.

On Thursday, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos said there is a need to relocate the 12,714 families, saying the move is to ensure their safety should the same flooding occurs again in the future.

“They are not supposed to be there. This problem will happen over and over again so the solution is for them not to construct houses near the river,” said Ramos.

Of the affected families, 5,250 of them are from Barangay Talomo Proper; 5,650 from the Matina Crossing where almost all the fatalities came from; 500 from Matina Pangi and 1,304 from Matina Aplaya.

While Ramos admitted that the massive relocation should be one of the safety measures that must be considered by the local government, he said he would not make a formal proposal about it.

He, however, stressed that the lives of the people living alongside the river will continuously be at risk if they remain in the area.

And since relocation of 12,714 families require more time and money, Ramos said the local government could start with the 50 families which were rendered homeless as the flooding flattened their houses.
