PNP working with DICT to take down deepfake video of PBBM

The investigation to identify the people behind the circulation of a fake video of President Marcos is ongoing, with the Philippine National Police (PNP) urging the public not to believe and even not to spread what authorities described as malicious deepfake video.

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said the police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) is continuously coordinating with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) for sharing of information and eventually facilitating the conduct of the probe. 

“The ACG is also coordinating with the DICT to take down the video so we ask our kababayan not to spread it because the initial investigation revealed that it was fake,” said Fajardo.

The video was shown in an anti-Marcos rally in the United States, which prompted government officials, including Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro to condemn the incident.

Both officials are seeking investigation to hold the people behind the video responsible as they stressed that the person shown in the video was fake and was deliberately and maliciously made to appear that it is the President. 

Abalos, for his part, tasked the PNP to form a special investigation task force to look into the incident.
