Filipinos win Penang skimboard contest
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Philippines (PIA) – Skimriders from the Philippines bagged the championship trophies in both the International Men’s Division and the International Women Division in Penang, Malaysia’s 5th International Skimboarding Competition last July 16-17, 2011.
The Filipino skimriders dominated the competition by winning the first three places in both the men and the women division of the competition, beating other skimboarders from Malaysia, Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Holland, Nigeria, Thai-land, Taiwan and China.
St. Bernard's 'KASANAG Southern Leyte'
SOUTHERN LEYTE (PIA) – Saint Bernard town in this province will launch “KASANAG-Southern Leyte” on July 23, 2011 at the Municipal Sports & Livelihood Center here. KASANAG refers to “Kalihukan sa Nagmatang Katawhan sa Timogang Leyte” and is a commitment by people in Southern Leyte to promote good governance, and ethical and empowering leadership among workers in the society.
The “KASANAG” sectoral organization include concerned Filipinos from different sectors such as the academe, women, youth, overseas Filipino workers, peasants, indigenous people, the differently-abled, church social action groups, professionals, retirees, urban poor and local government units.
PDMO holds SMS tech workshop
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA) – A workshop on infoboard system use in sending out alerts during emergencies was held at the Provincial Disaster Management Office (PDMO) at the capitol grounds here recently.
Leading the workshop was Jason Calva, head of the World Bank-funded “Strengthening Disaster Preparedness though SMS technology project” who said the workshop’s goal was to issue localized warning on an emergency situation in a particular location so that responders in the specific area can be informed and are able to react immediately.
Weather stations proposed in Bohol
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA) – Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in Tagbilaran Chief Narciso Cantor said recently that the putting up of more automatic weather stations in Bohol can greatly enhance local weather monitoring and this could mean a lot to disaster preparedness in local communities.
Thus, PAGASA in Bohol has proposed the putting up of these computerized weather facilities in four strategic locations: Bohol Island State University (BISU), Clarin, Bilar, and Talibon.
PDEA scores
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA 6) recently intercepted at Caticlan Airport some 70 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride worth P1 million bound for Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan. Atty. Ronnie Delicana, PDEA 6 chief legal counsel said recovery of the illegal substance confirms that pushers are keen in attempting to deliver their wares to Boracay even with the prying eyes of law enforcers.
He said PDEA 6 will be intensifying its intelligence operation both on Boracay and mainland Aklan to prevent the drug trade from blossoming in the country’s most popular holiday destination. (Tara Yap)
