No one bothers to run in small U.S. town's election

July 20, 2011, 4:13pm

TAR HEEL, North Carolina (AP) — The races for mayor and three commission seats are wide open in the small North Carolina town of Tar Heel — because no one bothered to run.

No one has registered as a candidate for the fall elections in the Bladen County town. The story was first reported by WECT-TV.

The ballots will be printed with blank spaces for voters to write in their choices.

Current Mayor Ricky Martin says he's not surprised no one wants the jobs. Even in a town of 117, it's hard work with little compensation. And Martin says state budget cuts mean the next elected officials might have to raise taxes.

Cynthia Shaw, the director of the county's board of elections, says it's the first time she has seen an entire town without a candidate.

Bear visits U.S. governor's mansion

SANTA FE, New Mexico (AP) — Surveillance video caught a bear walking past trash cans near the New Mexico governor's mansion in Santa Fe over the weekend likely searching for something to eat.

New Mexico Department of Game and Fish issued an alert to residents around nearby Los Alamos regarding bears that wandered into town after being displaced by the Las Conchas fire.

Gov. Susana Martinez, whose mansion is near the foothills of the mountains where a second fire has been burning, told New Mexicans to be proactive in keeping animals displaced by drought and fire away from their homes by removing items like pet food and bird feeders, and by securing trash cans.

The bear overturned two trash cans at the mansion, the governor's office said in a press release.

"Chuck and I will certainly be taking steps to safeguard the trash cans and the dogs," Martinez said. "One bear nosing through the yard is more than enough to teach us that you can't be too safe."

Mom, daughter in drunken driving

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Idaho authorities say a mother and daughter were arrested for drunken driving within an hour of each other — the mother when she went to pick up her daughter's dog.

The Post Register reports a sheriff's officer stopped 28-year-old Alisha Gardner at 10:56 p.m. Saturday in Idaho Falls after spotting her car swerving and crossing the centerline.

Sgt. Jeff Edwards says her blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit, so Gardner was taken to jail.

Just under an hour later, 51-year-old Diana Gardner arrived to pick up her daughter's dog, which was in the car. An officer smelled alcohol on her and a test revealed that her blood-alcohol level was also twice the legal limit, so she was arrested.

The report did not say what happened to the dog.

Hallucinating men call for help

SPRINGFIELD, Georgia (AP) — South Georgia authorities say two men became so high on drugs they began hallucinating and called 911 when they thought intruders had broken into a home.

Effingham County sheriff's spokesman David Ehsanipoor said the pair is suspected of using methamphetamine around the time they called 911 for help early Tuesday.

Deputies responding around 4 a.m. to the home outside Savannah were told by the pair that people in a back bedroom had broken into the home, but no intruders were found.

Ehsanipoor said deputies realized they were hallucinating. He said "they were so high they called 911 on themselves."
