Six armed men simultaneously robbed Macy’s Gold and Silver Jewelry Store and DGC D’Gold Chain Jewelry Store in daring robberies that left acting city Mayor Raymond Garcia disappointed.
Garcia warned that a change in leadership may be made at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) if the robberies will not be solved within 48 hours.
According to a witness, it took less than two minutes for the robbers to complete the robberies.
The two shops are both located at Labucay Building on Calderon St.
“It happened too fast. It took less than two minutes, they (robbers) immediately escaped. I saw one of them flashing a firearm that’s why I ran to a store to hide,” a cigarette vendor said.
Closed-circuit television camera footage at Macy’s showed that it was past noon when three armed men broke into the store and directed the security guard, workers, and customers to drop to the floor.
The armed men, who wore helmets and sweatshirts, ransacked the jewelry cases, hurriedly placed assorted jewelry into a bag, then fled on three separate Honda XRM motorcycles.
According to the CCPO, Macy’s lost P10 million in jewelry while P4 million worth of jewelry was taken from DGC D’Gold.
Police Col. Antonietto Cañete, CCPO chief, arrived in the area to check on the investigation.
The CCPO immediately conducted checkpoints in various areas here but the suspects were not intercepted. The Cebu Police Provincial Office is also conducting their own checkpoints.
Police Major Philip John Libres, chief of the Carbon Police Station, disclosed that two policemen deployed near the two shops but the robbers struck while they were patrolling in another area.
Libres said investigators are reviewing CCTV cameras to identify the robbers.
Garcia immediately called for a meeting with Cañete after the incident.
"We will investigate this matter. I will give him (Cañete) exactly 48 hours to solve this criminal act done by criminal elements here in our jurisdiction," Garcia said.
The twin robberies happened about two weeks after Cañete assumed post as CCPO chief.
Garcia made it known that he was still looking for other police officials to lead the CCPO despite the assumption of Cañete.
