1st 'Fishtahan' held in Malolos

MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan, Philippines — Fishes will literally flood the Capitol grounds, here, tomorrow as Bulakeños celebrate the very first “Fishtahan sa Bulacan, Araw ng Yamang Palisdaan,” a festival celebrating the province’s “bangus” (milkfish) and tilapia industry.

Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy Alvarado said the program will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Mini-Forest of the Capitol with Vice Gov. Daniel Fernando giving the welcome remarks. There will be an audio-visual presentation on the proper breeding of fish, talks on the industry and an oath-taking of officers of the Integrated Services for the Development of Aquaculture. Renal center opens in Angeles

ANGELES CITY — The local government here has formally opened the Angeles City Renal Care Unit at the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center (formerly Ospital Ning Angeles) to serve the needs of patients suffering from kidney diseases.

Located at the Luminda A. Ong Building, the newly-constructed dialysis treatment center which opened Saturday is now fully operational with 15 dialysis machines and complete sets of medical equipment. It is operated by three nephrologists, a head nurse, eight staff nurse and four technicians, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said. (Franco G. Regala)

Brownouts explained

LAGAWE, Ifugao — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) assured the provincial government that it will continue to provide reliable electric service to the Ifugao Electric Cooperative (IFELCO) as it explained yesterday the reason for long power outages in this province.

Henry Sy Jr., President and CEO of NGCP, stated that the company is still in the process of rehabilitating the lines that are already very old and dilapidated. He said the prolonged unplanned outages of the Bayombong-Lagawe 69 KV line that interrupted the power supply to IFELCO recently were the result of manual tripping due to unbalanced voltage reception. Gov. Pineda takes on malnutrition

SAN FERNANDOCITY, Pampanga — Governor Lilia G. Pineda underscored yesterday the importance of parents ensuring the proper nutrition, health and well-being of their children as she encouraged them to closely work with the government’s health workers and service providers to fight malnutrition in the province.

Pineda’s call was particularly aimed at parents, mothers especially, of children aged five and six. As a support activity, the Capitol had 200 malnourished children benefit from free medical check-up, medicines and a feeding program. (Franco G. Regala)

Nueva Ecija wages plastics war

PEÑARANDA, Nueva Ecija — In a bid to lessen the effect of global warming, at least 27 municipalities here have declared a “war against plastic bags.” The towns of Aliaga, Bongabon, Cabiao, Carranglan, Cuyapo, Gabaldon, Gen. M. Trinidad, General Tinio, Guimba, Jaen, Laer, Licab, Llanera, Lupao, Nampicuan, Pantabangan, Peñaranda, Quezon, Rizal, San Antonio, San Isidro, San Leonardo, Santa Rosa, Santo Domingo, Talavera, Talugtug and Zaragosa have already either passed or are passing ordinances prohibiting malls, groceries, supermarkets, restaurants, stores, public markets and other establishments from using non-biodegradable plastic bags.
