Dumaguete City holds Food Fair
DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines(PIA) — Twenty-five barangays in Dumaguete City participated in the Food Fair Friday in celebration of Nutrition Month at Quezon Park, this city. The City Nutrition Council and the agriculture office initiated the activity as part of the information drive on breastfeeding, wherein root crops and vegetables were featured, Community Affairs Officer, Syril Repe said.
With this year’s observance theme, “Isulong ang Breastfeeding-Tama, Sapat at EKsklusibo (TSEK), ” City Nutrition Officer, Lourdes Taburaza said activities lined-up includes well baby and cooking contest competitions, day care child selection, Day Care nutrition corner and school garden contests, quiz bowl and inter barangay booth contests.
Materials dredged
ILOILO CITY, (PNA) — Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is eyeing four sites along the Iloilo River as permanent disposal sites for more than 100,000 cubic meters of materials dredged from the river.
Mabilog said the government is set to dredge the highly silted Iloilo River and return it to its original depth of more than eight meters as rehabilitation and protection of the river is on full swing.
Senator Franklin M. Drilon is mainly instrumental in the rehabilitation and cleanup of the more than 15-kilometer river stretch by providing funds from his priority development assistance fund (PDAF).
Siblings saved
BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, (PNA) — Two Filipino-American (Fil-Am) siblings from Texas, the United States, were saved from drowning at the beach of this resort island Wednesday. Police identified them as Aldrin Caluya, 18, and his younger brother Adrian Caluya, 12.
They were swimming at the beach with their parents when the incident happened, the police report said. "They decided to swim at the deeper part of the beach when strong waves engulfed them. Nearby lifeguards immediately responded and rescued them," said Supt. Samuel Nacion, Boracay Police chief.
DepEd gardening
DUMAGUETE CITY, (PNA) — The container gardening and the vegetable production program will be propagated in the city’s public schools in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the city overnment of Dumaguete.
City agriculturist William Ablong said this is in line with the program “Gulay at Palaisdaan Alay sa Kabataan,” (GPAK), a Galing Pook program awardee of the province of Negros Oriental. Ablong said the containerized gardening and vegetable production program is aimed at raising vegetables with the use of containers, instead of throwing them as garbage.
Water monitoring
SIQUIJOR, Siquijor- With only very few local government units (LGU) having an established Local Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Committees (LDWQMC), the Region 7 office of the Department of Health (DoH) has recently conducted learning sessions and seminar on how to create the said committee in this town by virtue of an Executive Order (EO).
It can be recalled that for Central Visayas only three LDWQMC are established in Bohol, Negros Oriental with six, one in Cebu and none so far in this province. In Bohol, the towns of Tubigon, Garcia-Hernandez and Loon are the three towns that were able to organize their LDWQMC through an EO signed by thir respective local chief executives but only two were able to complete its monitoring plans.
