St. Scholastica's College's new president
MANILA, Philippines — St. Scholasitca's College, Manila recently installed Sr. Mary Thomas Prado, OSB as its 18th president.
Sr. Mary Thomas has undergraduate degrees in Medical Technology and Psychology; a graduate degree in Psychology; and post-graduate degrees in Theology from the University of Negros Occidental, Recoletos; Gregorian University in Rome; and Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, U.S.A. She held the posts of vice president for Academic Affairs (VPAA), dean of Graduate School, and dean of College prior to her new appointment.
St. Scholastica’s College, Manila (SSC Manila) was founded by five German nuns in 1906. It began as a windowless wagon-shed located along Moriones Street in Tondo. The first students were six girls and two boys from well-off families, and 50 more boys and girls comprising the “Free School.”
The School, through Sr. Baptista Battig, OSB, pioneered the country’s first Conservatory of Music in 1907. It is now known as the SSC Manila’s School of Music).
The first Institute for Women Studies was established by SSC Manila in 1985, addressing women issues, rights, and empowerment. In 2007, SSC Manila was declared a National Historical Site by the National Historical Institute.
PSID sets lecture series at SM North EDSA
The Philippine School of Interior Design and the College of Saint Benilde, in cooperation with SM City North EDSA Interior Zone is conducting “I.D. Your Home,” a lecture series that presents decorating from a design perspective on all Saturdays of the month, from 2 to 4 p.m.
Topics are “Table Setting and Themed Table Arrangement” by Maricar Dela Rama on Aug. 20; and Flower Arrangement and Foliage Styling by Dr. Michael Pizarro on Aug. 27. The Interior Zone will also feature vignettes designed by PSID students from Aug. 13 to 28. “I.D Your Home” is a prelude to "Jak En Poy: Bato, Gunting, Papel, Atbp.: An Interior Design Exhibit of Sustainable Proportions,” the graduation exhibit of the PSID Advanced Class of 2011, which runs from Oct. 1-31 at the Interior Zone, SM City North EDSA, Quezon City.
In cooperation with with SM City North EDSA Interior Zone, “Jak en Poy” showcases 20 different spaces designed in creatively planned solutions. Sustainable interior materials, such as stone, steel, concrete, paper, glass, wood, bamboo, rubber, plastic and clay, are applied to interior design booths that evoke different moods and styles, conscious of the concept of designing for a better world.
MFI-TI is Outstanding PICS Chapter
MFI Technological Institute (MFI-TI) was chosen as the Most Outstanding Chapter of the Philippine Instrumentation and Control Society (PICS) during the Industrial Automation Technology Expo (IATEX 2011) held recently at the Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay City.
The citation was awarded to MFI-TI for having demonstrated “excellence in promoting the objectives of the society (PICS) to students, the academe and the industry.”
Alumni from MFI-TI’s three-year Instrumentation Technology course under the Industrial Technician Program (ITP) have also topped the certification exams for instrumentation and control engineers and instrumentation and control technicians.
Aside from the scholarship program, MFI-TI also offers short courses for working professionals in the fields of IT, electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation, automotive, refrigeration and air-conditioning technology.
Program on child healthcare starts
The Department of Child Health of the Far Eastern University (FEU) Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation and the FEU-Pediatric Residency Alumni Association will hold its 23th Postgraduate Course on the theme ‘’Subspecialities Made Easy for the Generalist’’ on Aug. 15 and 16, at Gateway Suites, Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.
