Spearheaded by the Caraga Conference for Peace and Development (CCPD), Muslims and Christians, along with their respective chieftains and sectoral leaders from the Higaonon, Manobo, Mamanwa, Talaindig, and other tribes in the region, made a united call to “stop violence.”
They made their strong appeal at the culmination of the weeklong celebration of Mindanao Week of Peace at the Bishop’s House here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in his strongly-worded message, the Most Rev. Bishop Cosme Damian R. Almedilla, DD of the Diocese of Butuan also appealed to the people of Mindanao and Caraga region to continue their unified effort “without let up” in solving “our societal problems, the insurgency, and other issues and concerns of the different sectors.”
The prelate stressed that it is only through unity that Caraganons and Mindanoans can attain genuine peace and live in harmony until the next generation.
“Let us continue unite for peace,” the prelate said.
CCPD Executive Director Fr. Carlito Clasi and Director Ferdausi S. Cerna also encouraged the "tri-people" in the region "not to just preach peace but also live with it.”
They said the people of Caraga must triumph over the fear that serves as a hindrance to achieving lasting peace.
On the other hand, Atty. Paisal M. Mamintal of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF 13) emphasized the similarities between cultures of the people of Mindanao that he said can become the "strength to attain peace.”
The almost weeklong Mindanao Week of Peace 2019 started on Nov. 28 and featured dialogues between the people in the region on different perspectives on peace and development.
Brig. Gen. Maurito Licudine, commanding general of the Army’s 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade, also told the participants that “sincerity and working as one” are needed among parties in conflict to achieve lasting peace in the area and Mindanao.
Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director General Abner M. Caga, also concurrent regional director of Caraga PIA 13, noted the importance of proper communication and dialogue among all sectors of the society in Caraga region.
He told the participants to help the government fight the spread of fake information.
“Everybody plays a vital role to achieve this elusive peace in Mindanao,” Caga added.
“This is a fruitful message this Christmas -- love, peace, and unity, in the culmination of our weeklong activity,” Clasi said.
