Former Negros Occidental governor passes away

BACOLOD CITY - Former Governor Alfredo  Marañon Jr. in Negros Occidental succumbed to cardiac health complications late Thursday night at the Riverside Medical Center here.

Marañon passed away around 11:38 p.m., according to his family. He would have been 85 years old this December.

He started his political career in 1964, as a councilor of Sagay City. He was a three-term governor and three-term mayor of his hometown Sagay City, and congressman of the second district.

Marañon, fondly called as “Freddie”, is best remembered for his kind ways and for being open and accessible even to ordinary capitol employees.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, in a statement, expressed his deep sadness for the passing of Marañon.

“I was his Vice Governor for six years and it was a privilege to have worked with him and to have learned from him,” Lacson said.

Lacson said that Marañon was among the keenest political minds of the province.

“The life he dedicated to public service spans more than five decades which he spent addressing the prevalent problems of his hometown, his district and the province,” the governor added.

Lacson said that the people of Negros Occidental share the grief of his demise, and will always remain grateful for his devotion to service and his commitment to the advancement of the province.

Meanwhile, Marañon’s family asked to respect their privacy during their moments of grief.

A virtual gathering will be announced to allow those who cannot be with them to honor his life and achievements, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The family thanked everyone for their prayers, love, and concern.
