DepEd okays full implementation of STEM in 2 Makati elementary schools
Two public elementary schools have received the Department of Education's (DepEd's) approval for the full implementation of special math and science curricula for Grade 3 students, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay announced Tuesday, March 26.
According to Binay, the special curriculum will have Enhanced Science and Technology, Mathematics, and English subjects for Grade 3 students wherein they will be given more challenging and advanced lessons and activities that will sharpen their analytical and problem-solving skills.
Larger projects will also be given to them to challenge and hone their creativity and resourcefulness.
Learners will also have Robotics and Computer Programming subjects which will let them experience digital and technology-centered learning that they may use in their daily lives.
The local government unit (LGU) said that around 400 students will be participating in the program.
"Simula sa darating na school year, ang mga gifted at talented students mula sa Palanan Elementary School at Makati Elementary School ay makakapag-focus na sa kanilang STEM curricula para lalo pang mahasa at ma-develop ang kanilang angking galing at talino (Starting next school year, the gifted and talented students of Palanan Elementary School and Makati Elementary Schoo will be able to focus on their STEM curricula to further enhance and develop their abilities and knowledge)," Binay said.
She added that this will be a great advantage for the students because the advanced curricula will help them prepare for the college courses they would want to take.
"Maaga pa lang ay maihahanda na sila para sa mas mahihirap na leksyon at ito ang kanilang magiging edge sa darating na mga taon. Maaari rin itong magbukas ng mas maraming oportunidad para sila ay makakuha ng iba’t ibang scholarships o grants sa kanilang pag-aaral (It is better to prepare them as early as now in tackling difficult lectures as this will be their edge in the coming years. This may also be the key in opening more opportunities for them to be able to be given different grants and scholarships in their studies," the mayor explained.
As of now, only Palanan and Makati Elementary Schools have been given the special permits by the DepEd while the city government continues to do its best to increase the number of schools to be granted with the special privilege.
