PCG: 36 passengers saved from distressed ro-ro

Thirty-six passengers of a distressed roll-on/roll-off ship were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG in the vicinity waters between Cordova, Cebu and Cabul-an Island in Buenavista, Bohol recently.

An incident report submitted by the Coast Guard District Central Visayas to the PCG main headquarters Sunday, Sept. 11, said MV VG RORO II sent a distress call to Coast Guard Sub Station (CGSS) Talibon after it encountered an engine trouble and suddenly went dead on the water.

The incident happened last Friday, Sept. 9.

The Coast Guard Station (CGS) Eastern Bohol then coordinated with the Coast Guard District Central Visayas (CGDCV) for the deployment of fast patrol boat BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) to the area for assistance.

“More or less 36 passengers including two children and one six-month-old infant were rescued,” the PCG said.

The passengers were safely ferried to Pier 3, Cebu City by the BRP Malamawi.

Meanwhile, MV VG RORO II was towed back by two cargo motor bancas to Talibon Port for damage assessment and repair.

MV VG RORO II is operated by the Cebu-based VG Shipping Lines. In a Facebook post last month, the VG Shipping Lines announced that MV VG RORO II had just resumed its trips on Sept. 8 – a day before the maritime incident.
