Police have set the re-enactment of the killing of Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili on Thursday as investigators continue searching for clues that will aid their investigation.
In this image made from video, Philippines Mayor Antonio Halili is seen on the ground after being shot during a flag-raising ceremony, Monday, July 2, 2018, in Tanauan city, south of Manila, Philippines. Mayor Halili known for parading drug suspects in public but also alleged to have drug ties himself was shot and killed by a sniper Monday in a brazen attack in front of horrified employees and village leaders. Top officials from the Calabarzon Police Regional Office (PRO-4A), Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Halili, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and representatives from regional units of Crime Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) are expected to attend the re-enactment at the new building of Tanauan City Hall in Barangay Natatas.
Chief Superintendent Edward Carranza, regional director of PRO-4A, said the re-enactment will determine whether the gunman's spot was really the place where the assailant positioned himself.
Officials from the Crime Laboratory were also ordered to determine the exact height of Halili as officials will try to find out whether the bullet fired from the gunman's spot would indeed hit the target.
"We will be undertaking a re-enactment and I have requested the SITG commander as well as Crime Lab to re-enact this and we have to clear, using the site and from that position then hitting the mayor, tama ba ang target (is the target correct?)," he explained.
That the gunman's spot could be used as a diversionary tactic to hide the traces of the assailant is a possibility which cannot be set aside by the investigators, Carranza said.
However, since no other clues can be found at the scene and based on the initial investigation, he said, "Iyan ang kinoconsider natin na pinagpwestuhan ng gunman (We consider it as the spot where the gunman positioned himself.)
Senior Superintendent Nolasco Bathan, deputy regional director for operations and head of the SITG Halili, said the re-enactment will take place "at the same time when the mayor was killed." Halili was shot around 8:10 a.m. while singing the national anthem during a flag-raising ceremony last Monday.
Ahead of the planned re-enactment, a SWAT unit visited the crime scene on Wednesday morning to conduct an initial inspection.
Mass
Meanwhile, officials of the Batangas provincial government offered a mass on Wednesday at Saint John the Evangelist Parish in Tanauan City for Halili.
Halili's wake was also opened for public viewing as supporters and constituents continued to flock to offer condolences to the family of the slain mayor.
