Airport, Awake

MANILA, Philippines — What an improvement! We were only the fifth worst airport in the world last year. This time, on the travel website, “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports,” we’re No. 1!

Sleepers ranked us the worst. Can you imagine what they’d have said if they had been wide awake? One good thing about NAIA: It’s so small you save footsteps and time running from the lounge to the departure gates.

That’s why the terminal didn’t give you an escalator or a conveyor belt. That’s why you don’t have to huff and puff chasing the train that’s not there to take you from Gate 23 to Gate 150. First of all, we don’t have  that many gates!

Appreciate what we have! What we have, said airport GM Jose Angel Honrado’s deputy, is an airport bugged by the people’s “customs and culture.”

At least he didn’t say Bureau of Customs. We also have earnings of P10 billion last year, Maj. Gen. Honrado told “Bulong Pulungan” last May 31. You see, our airport is so rich it can’t handle all that money!

What are those sleepers complaining about? We have “17 sets of toilets in Terminal 1 alone.” If they’re not always in perfect order, charge it to “customs and culture”: Girl janitors can’t enter the men’s rooms. See, we’re No. 1 in gender sensitivity!
