MANILA, Philippines — President Aquino has announced that the government intends to improve the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 to ensure safe and efficient operations for another four to five years, adding that alternatives to the old facility are now under study.

The President, in his first interactive YouTube forum, said these "stop-gap measures" for structural and aesthetic rehabilitation of NAIA will be presented to him by the transportation department on Tuesday next week.

Aquino acknowledged that the airport, built three decades ago and named after his slain father, has become saturated, exceeding its limit of passenger traffic of 32 million.

He said the government is looking into long-term alternatives for the old NAIA in a bid
growing tourism arrival in the country.

The NAIA terminal 1 was recently recognized as the “world's worst airport” by a travel website.
