DILG calls on filmmakers to join first women empowerment film festival

By Alexandria Dennise San Juan The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) called on filmmakers to join the first women empowerment film festival dubbed as "CineMarya" launched on Friday. (google image/ fdcp) (google image/ fdcp) Filmmakers have at least three weeks or until June 30 to submit their film proposals for "CineMarya," which was initiated by the DILG, with Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), and the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW). During the launch of the film festival at the department’s office today, DILG Assistant Secretary Marjorie Jalosjos said film proposals should focus on themes tackling women empowerment, different roles of women in the society, awareness about diverse social issues on women and equality, and other related women issues. Jalosjos said "CineMarya" aims to bring to the big screen women's issues and concerns to push local governments to uphold women's rights welfare and benefits. "CineMarya stems from the DILG's aim for local government units to mainstream GAD and the Magna Carta for Women into their local plans, programs, and activities," Jalosjos said. The assistant secretary added that the CineMarya is an "educational and artistic' support mechanism for LGUs vying for the DILG Seal of Good Local Governance. According to Jalosjos, 10 proposals will be chosen and will be given a seed money of P100,000 for the production of 10- to 20-minute short films. Of these ten proposals, four will be selected from Luzon, three from Visayas, and three from Mindanao through a blind selection process of the selection committee. The CineMarya executive committee is chaired by the DILG, while FDCP headed by Liza Diño-Esguerra is the vice chair. The ExeCom members included PCW Commissioner Noreen Capili, Presidential Communications Operations Office Asec. Mocha Uson, Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, Lady Legislators' League of the Philippines president Jo Revil, National Commission for Culture and the Arts chairperson Virgilio Almario, Movie and Television Review and Classification Board chairperson Rachel Arenas, Film Academy of the Philippines director general Leo Martinez, and Ginnir Oribiana of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. The members of the ExeCom will serve as panelists for the film festival which will distribute incentive awards for the finalists, such as cash and trophies. Interested filmmakers may submit their entries through http://fdcp.ph/cinemarya/submit-your-entry with themes on battling violence against women, Marawi women and the city's rehabilitation, or Magna Carta for Women.
