BSP run on Thursday

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Philippines (PIA) — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) in Dumaguete City is inviting local runners and brisk walking enthusiasts to join its “Mahalaga Ako Night” run Thursday. The 2.5-km - 5-km. run will be held along with the Bankers Club of Negros Oriental (BCNO), Dumaguete Amateur Runners and Striders (DARS) and the Metro Dumaguete Road Runners Club (MDRC).

Registration will be at 7:30 p.m. at the BSP Dumaguete’s new building at North Road Daro. To register, participants are required to either bring low-denomination coins, particularly the 25-centavo coins, or donate an amount of at least P20 more for BSP’s classroom-building project.

Capability training

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — Some 70 Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL) members from the Visayas, Mindanao and Luzon are in Cebu for a three-day capability building training program expected to guide the local legislators in addressing environmental concerns.

Technical experts will serve as resource speakers on such pertinent subjects as urban development, coastal-marine management and upland development. The training is also designed to capacitate participants in identifying and finding solutions to specific environmental problems in their localities and guide them in drafting local ordinances and resolutions to protect, preserve and sustain the environment.

Batang Pinoy

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA) — The Maasin City sports delegation competing in the 2011 Batang Pinoy (BP) games is in Dumaguete City for the sports event starting Thursday until Sunday, November 13. The Maasin athletes will compete in swimming, boxing, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwando, badminton and arnis.

Batang Pinoy is a Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) project inaugurated in 1999. Fifteen sports, all on the Youth Olympics program, are played under Batang Pinoy by athletes aged 15 or younger enrolled in elementary and high-school as well as out of school youths.

Model child

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) — The Iloilo city government’s Task Force on Street Children is again looking for the “Huwaran nga Anak” or model child from indigent families here. Now on its second year, the search for the model child here is a main activity of the Task Force headed by chairperson Rosalie Treñas, wife of Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Jerry Treñas.

“We are looking for youths who have outstanding achievements or contributions at home, in school and in the community despite poor economic conditions thus proving that poverty is not a hindrance to success,” Mrs. Treñas said.

Eating right

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) — In line with the month-long celebration of the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM), the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 8 is spearheading the promotion and advocacy for Eastern Visayas with the theme, “Eat your Rice Right.”

Regional Executive Director Antonio Gerundio said the info campaign will highlight the Food Production Programs anchored on the Agri-Pinoy Framework formulated by the DA’s top management. The DA -8 supports the PhilRice – initiated promotional campaign on “One Rice-less Day,” aimed at encouraging the public to eat right amounts of rice and try other good carbohydrate sources like white corn, sweet potato, and cassava.
